Yeah, we will be gentle and try to help you out and learn as you go.  There is actually a decent amount of information in just the quick start.

For those who aren't familiar with the setting, I would say if you want to get inroads into Game of Thrones begin watching the show. Skip the books for now. Just go watch the first season or two to get a handle on the setting and themes. You wont catch all the names or houses etc. at first, at least I didn't. I didn't particularly even like the show at first because I was so lost. I had to watch each episode several times and rewind conversations. But after my second watchthrough of Season 1, I really, really began to like the show. It eventually became my favorite show. It blows my mind how I could go from being cold to GOT to having it become my favorite show. And that's because I put in the effort and work to appreciate what I was watching. I had the same experience watching Westworld.

Game of Thrones will reward you with exactly what you put into it. If you just half-watch while playing on your ipad, you will enjoy the T&A, disembowlings, and vulgarity. But it you really study the houses and their stories and follow each character and their connections, you will get sooooooo much more out of what is going on. Even though I have seen the show all the way through several times, I get more out of it each time I watch it. Take notes, even. Pick favorite characters and plotlines. Make bets on what will happen. And most of all AVOID SPOILERS, lol.

It's totally worth the time invested. Just do a little at a time. But do watch it. It'll help you enjoy the RPG more. It's like if you were going to roleplay In the Star Wars universe, you will get so much more out of the experience and be able to do so much more with it having seen the Star Wars movies.

I've read the books more times than I can remember, and I've watched the TV show 3 times in the early seasons and twice for the later ones.  I have also played in two ASoIaF campaigns so far, so I'm a bit of a fan.   :wizi:

Okay, before I build my stats, I have first a question what I should have as Status value. I imagine my character to be of another noble house and would like to be betrothed to the heir of house Baneford. But I also would like to have a slight difficulty for me there, I would like that my husband to be is pretty much brain damaged from be being drowned by his father, which he survived but there is not much happen anymore in his brain, and now I am stuck with not yet being married and thus a little unsecured situation.

I would like at least ONE character to be a member of the actual family, but if no one wants to do that, I can manage.  I'll try to post a character creation thread soon to help everyone.

I like the character concept though.  Sure, you are betrothed to one of the heirs that was partially drowned and lived to kind of mumble about it.  Think about what family you want to be a member of.  Any family in the Seven Kingdoms is fair game Angel.  :)

Hmm, I'll have to think about Status...

If indeed nobody wants to play a direct member of the house I could change my young lady to be of the house. My concept would then change to that most male heirs died, maybe I have a cousin who is barely alive but mostly imbecil since he got nearly drowned, which puts my character now close to become head of the house even though she is female, since there is no reasonable male alternative. But the catch is that she is already betrthoed to the heir of a noble family in the riverlands and thus is expected to marry away and worse that the family of my husband to be would get rights to claim Banefort for them, which are all options that are horrible, since this could bring war over the lands between the Lannister and the Tully.

I think that could potentially be more intersting to play, but my character would then be suddenly fastly more important, and I feel like I already hog spotlight just for proposing that idea. Also, playing such a pivotal role means that the who game could break if I fall into an depressive episode, which put also some pressure onto me. But well, now I have said it. Thoughts?

Since you wanted to go with your original idea of being betrothed to someone who was drowned, I say we stick to that.  I want players to play something that is fun for them.  I also don't want to put too much stress on you (as I understand what you mean about depression swooping in to ruin things from time to time).

If no one else wants to be an heir, since you are the betrothed of the Heir, then you could be the puppet-master really.  If you also want to be the the Steward of the house that would make sense I would think.

Your second idea is cool too, but the first seems to be better from my vantage point.  This way you can have ties to another house somewhere else in Westeros.  Nothing binds houses together like marriage or the promise of it.  If you want a House that is nearby that can have benefits, because if you call for some sort of aid they may be willing to help.  If they are farther away the chances of that would be less so I would think, depending on the circumstances of course.  :)  If you would like help picking out a major or minor house let me know, but I think you know the setting well enough to do that on your own.  It can be one of the big houses if you like.  Remember this is an alternate timeline, so feel free to be from the Starks, or the Baratheons, or the Lannisters, or from whatever house sounds fun.  There are always lots of Freys.  lol.

I'm glad you wanted to play Angel, those are all great ideas by the way.

I'll start working on the character creation thread, though I doubt I'll get it all the way finished before I head into work...

In my last 2 ASoIaF games we had "Open Secrets" which is when everyone shares every secret thing with the other players even though each character is keeping things, schemes, etc. from each other.

Closed Secrets is when there are secrets from the other players AND the characters.

I think Ivan and Richard like a Closed Secrets approach. How about the rest of you?

I prefer open secrets, but I can live with closed. I think closed secrets put players a little to much against each other, while I usually assume most players I play with are mature enough to seperate character knowledge and player knowledge, and that the player knowledge often helps to keep up the suspense and enjyoablity to just watch other players and what they do, especially when one is not involved, since knowing what is at stack for the other characters can create immersion though narrative tension... but well I am the narrativist here, of course I look at it through my narrative lense.

I never thought that Open Secrets is more Narrativist but I guess it is.

As long as everyone can enjoy the game that works for me.

I think some players could be open and others closed too... Maybe.

I think we should define how much PVP we want before we choose Open or Closed Secrets. I assume there will be a certain degree of backstabbery and scheming in a Game of Thrones campaign. And I welcome it. Course it depends on the group, blah blah blah. Now,when we eventually work up to multiple characters and I have one of my PCs backstabbing another one of my PCs, that is when stuff gets interesting! Lol.

I think Angel mentioned that she didn't like as much PVP and competition between players.  I agree though that some of that will happen, as that is part of the setting almost.  Still, everyone in House Banefort for the most part I think is routing for its success, so that is something for all of the characters to rally around. Maybe.   ::)   hehe.

In the two campaigns I was in there was a minor amount of screwing each other over, but the group was the kind that found that funny OOC and enjoyable.

I prefer PvP to stay in video games, where I can enjoy that pretty much, but yes in roleplay games I like to have at most a friendly competition. I think there is potential for my character and Richard's to get into conflict, about the succession of the house, but we will see maybe he has never though about that or we will find a solution soon that makes everybody happy. Anyway, I personally prefer when the player characters feel sympathy to each other and try to work together...

But of course I always can make another character. Which reminds me, my week had been rather busy, but I should be capable to build my character today, so I hope it is up in a few hours.
