Rolemaster Companion I released!
« on: September 07, 2008, 04:47:34 AM »
The RM2 version of Rolemaster Companion I has been released by the Guild Companion. You can find it at

http://guild.ironcrown.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=121&products_id=504

One of the essential books for RM2, this is a good thing for us old-schoolers.

Just a quick note that this version of RoCoI also includes updates for the Rolemaster Classic version of the game as well.

So... I hope that this 'Author's Preferred Edition' comes with lots of extras, like deleted scenes, outtakes, maybe even a 'Making of RoCoI' featurette...

I just hope that they didn't 'Lucas' it...

Han fired first!

Is this a 20th Anniversary Special edition?  Chromium cover?

Heh, if you want the amusing, behind the scenes stories, you'll need to poke Nick, Ictus, Cormac, Rick and Myself. . .I don't think Mark is a member of the board, so you'll only get 5/6 of the story.

S'far as I know, it's mostly just the removal of some MERP references, and adding in some RMC elements like Racial Level Offset.

High point is the story of the Black Reaver, IIRC

**Some** being the operative word.

Anything explicitly mentioning MERP was excised ... but MarK C's original introduction talked about the inspiration of the book (Court of Ardor) ... and that is still there ... just no mention that it5 was a MERp title

What I want to know is...

1. Is there ANYTHING new in it, that might persuade me to buy it... ?
2. Is there stuff that is compatible with RMSS/FP or is it just a re-hase/re-release of the same stuff?

Depends on your definition of "New"

The entire scope and design of the project was to republish the old RM2 RoCo for the people who can't replace them; and to make the RoCo compatible with RMC

Two small paragraphs were excised, and several others modified to remove problematic IP issues regarding MERP

RMC compatibility notes were added

The entire layout and readabilitty/flow of the produuct was revisited

The various errors corrected in a series of (often lost) FAQ's and updates were integrated into the main text

What's new compared to RMSS/FRP ... almost nothing - at the time when RMSS/FRP were being written, ICE had full use of the RoCo series to plunder and reuse as necessary ... as such, there's not much here that hasn't been republished in some form.

The professions are different (the "Nightblade" never saw light of day in it's original form in RMSS ... being neutered/rebalanced as the Magent; the "High Warrior Monk" never appeared in RMSS (but the use of MAC probably invalidates the use of such a speciaiized class); the Arcanist is a unique class ... as is the arcane magic here - it is NOT treated the same as in RMSS/FRP

There is a section on determining how many mages/Clerics/Soldiers/universities/etc might appear in a given town/village/city - something that does not appear in RMSS (but Castles and Ruins contains an alternate method of determining much of this).

There is a facinating section on childbirth, and how many brothers/sisters your character might have, and whether any of the births werre complicated (and whether your mother died in childbirth) and such like - facinating, and does not appear anywhere else in the RM library.

Do any of those sound like reasons to buy it? It's well worth the cost!

this is an authentic reproduction of the original work, nothing removed, and just a little reorganisation to improve things.

after all it wasn't broke, and has been considered one of the most useful companions and a must have by most RM2 players.

to me it is better than the original, but the original was great, so only a few things were amended and the layout I hope improved.

Ah. so no then..  ;) (I've already got the original... but thought the new races needed padding out.)

as the original is over 20 years old, a pdf may be a good idea, and it looks quite nice too ;)

I do have two... one pristine, the other "well-thumbed".

What they should do is a bumper re-issue with just the professions (from all the old companions and their relevent spell lists...). I'd buy that.

now that would be a good idea, coupled with the skill cost tables from companion 4(? or was it 3?)

We are hoping to recreate Rolemaster Companion II next as a book entire. Companions 3-5 and 7 are unlikely to be fully recoverable - there are just too many contributors to locate, so it is likely that these will be converted into compendia, but we'll see how it goes.

Best wishes,
Nicholas
