On the trail of life (Fhguhg's test)
« on: December 22, 2008, 09:56:15 PM »
The day started like any ordinary day, but that was only the beginning. Huffnar the shaman approached you as you were finishing breakfast. "Bring me at least five snowdrops", he requested. Snow drops are common enough during the last weeks of autumn, but in the middle of the summer they are almost impossible to find. Such a request could only mean one thing: Fhguhg was being tested. Huffnar had been a good mentor, but he liked to be mysterious, but this time Fhguhg felt sure about it. His test of manhood was finally here! "And be quick about it!", Huffnar adds with a snap as he stalks back towards the tent of the sick.

Sprinting away on his quest he thinks.

He wants snowdrops. He will get snowdrops.
The ledge in middle of the Cliff-That-Breaks-Peoples-Bones just might hold some..

Suddenly he freezes in mid-run.

Maybe I should bring my spear and net with me.
Might be smileys lurking around and the elders have been very strict about them. Don´t!! They say.

Thus he turns back and equips himself..

Cliff-That-Breaks-Peoples-Bones is visible from camp. On the summit of that cliff is a holy place. Only few people go there, well except for the warriors and some hunters. They compete in climbing said cliff, the steep side of it (where the ledge is). There is a path going up to the summit along the only gentle slope is on the face away from camp, and it takes half a day to go to that side, since one has to go quite far to ford the river (unless one wants to try swimming). The shade that the cliff provides might be a good place to start...

Thinking it usually is easier to climb up than down, Fhguhg heads towards the shade of cliff, all the while keeping his eyes open for any useful herbs that he might see..

After walking for an hour or so Fhguhg can find a patch of Feverfew, a plant known to cure many illnesses. A very useful plant indeed. There are enough of the flowers to make 12 doses of Feverfew tea. The plant can also be rubbed on the skin when treating sick patients to prevent catching the disease yourself.

The rest of the trip is uneventful and you reach the Cliff-That-Breaks-Peoples-Bones later in the afternoon. There are no snowdrops on the ground.

To climb roll d20 and add your climbing skill to it (14). We'll take this in steps. Also make a roll on Herbalism.

Gathering all Feverfev he can, and storing them with the respect and proper procedures required.
Then he starts climbing.

Rolling 1d20+14:
(1)+14: Total = 15

Herbalism dice follows..

Climbing can be dangerous...

Rolling 1d20+14: (1)+14: Total = 15

Please roll again for climbing. A one (1) is always a chance of critical failure. If the second roll is also a failure then it is a critical failure, otherwise only a normal failure. Luckily it is only your first roll, so you aren't too high up ;)

Opposing roll. The difficulty for the first 3 meters is 10... it gets harder higher up
Rolling 1d20+10:
(7)+10: Total = 17

OOC no critical failure.

Fhguhg manages to climb a few meters with surprising ease, but then he can't find foothold. and starts slipping. He slips and slips again and he comes down all the way, bruised a bit but otherwise unhurt.

Fhguhg starts climbing and manages to climb up about 8 meters before his grip slips and he falls...

Ouch... That is 8 times 1D4, Lethal damage to 5 locations, but you can try to reduce the fall with your gymnastics skill. DR is 5 (the height fallen) and the effective fall can be reduced by the effect number.

Success! EN is 13/2 = 7, it means you only take damage from a 1m fall. Which means 2,L to left leg. Not bad

Fhguhg falls but his reflexes are good, he manages to fall on his feet, but is a bit slow at rolling and hurts his left foot.

Having fresh insight to the history behind the cliffs name, he sits down to nurse his foot for a while.

Afterwards he decides to see his other options and starts to walk the long way around to the top..

The trek around the hill goes relatively smoothly, but it takes a few hours. Fhguhg approaches the summit in the afternoon. The sun is starting to get low. From the top of the summit Fhguhg can see miles in all directions, however he knows he should not be here, only shamans are allowed to come to this holy place. However as far as he can remember no-one should be coming here during this time (no holy days or anything like that). Looking down from the top of the hill Fhguhg can see that some snow berries are actually growing a few meters down on a ledge.
