There's muffled shouting, but no gunfire as he does his quick climb by. The roof is covered in antennas a rotating radar dish and a fixed satellite up-link dish. . .the last looks a bit melted.

The roof hatch is about three paces from the top of the ladder on John's right.

"Dammit!" John cursed, and moved double time to the hatch.  If he can get the hatch open he'll attempt to throw a concussion grenade down there while trying not to get shot himself (He'll stand on the hinged side for better protection).

The hatch is a standard model, John recalls that the lock is broken, though it indicates from inside that it's locked, the lock doesn't actually work. The lock was removed after one of the techs locked themselves out in a snowstorm, then had to climb down the outside ladders, and broke his leg falling off the last one, and was lucky to crawl inside before he froze to death.

The rotating space-hatch style grip handle makes a satisfying click indicating that nobody put the lock back in since the last time John was up here two decades ago.

The door pulls up, and john goes to toss the grenade in.

The grenade primes fine, but a burst of rounds hit the underside of the hatch, fragments of metal  spatter across john's face and arm causing him to drop the handle, the hatch snaps shut and the grenade toss skitters across the roof into the base of one of the antennas about 4 meters down toward the left corner.

The faceplate of the helmet is scored, lines and cracks messing with john's view a bit, there are fragmentation holes in the sleeves of his suit, but he can't tell how badly his forearms were hit, he can still make fists and open them, so it can't be too bad.

"Dang it!" John cursed his luck again. "Marley, stay down...grenade!" he shouted has he turned his back to the stray concussion grenade.

John took another concussion grenade from his belt and decided to try it a second time,when the stray goes off.

<Pampf>

Thick yellow-green smoke or gas starts erupting from the base of the antenna array, pluming off the roof off to john's left.

<tick-click> the grenade is armed but you have the button down so the timer isn't started yet.

Seeing the thick yellow-green smoke from the grenade, John didn't know if he felt lucky or not. He disarmed the blue labled grenade and put it back on his belt. Taking a green labeled grenade this time, he hoped that things might go his way this time. Putting one hand on the latch handle and the other with the grenade he took a deep breath ready for a second attempt...

John is ready for shots this time, his hand is out of the way, but the hatch flips all the way open and  bounces about 15 degrees from laying flat on the roof.

The grenade sails through the hole.

(After that?)

John took out his knife and left his rifle on the roof ready to drop down through the hatch as soon as the grenade goes off. He does not want to risk shooting any hostages or being unable to maneuver to fire his rifle in a confined space. He took a deep breath and waited for the bang...

<Womp>

The room below rapidly fills with green smoke, the firing falls off, john moves over and looks down, it's a totally opaque cloud down there, and it's coming up out of the hatch now too.

John with the pistol in one hand he drew out his knife in the other. He began to breath deep, filling his lungs in and out slowly as he was trained in another lifetime. With one last deep breath he stepped to the edge of the hatch... then jumped in feet first.

John lands, a bit off balance due to what feels like trash or debris on the floor, but keeps his feet, he knows the layout of consoles in here, but also that there's four rolly chairs and who knows what junk scattered around in the fighting. The green smoke is totally opaque in here.

John crouches down low hoping that the green smoke will rise a little exposing the feet and location of the enemy. He does a full 360 scan and tries to listen for any noise.
