Mala

"The mountain?"  Her mind still a bit sleep fogged.  "Oh yes, that mountain.  Sorry, mind a bit fuzzy right now."

Gregori

"In that case, mayhaps we should go back inside and get some more rest first."

OOC:  I guess you're finished talking, so on we go!

Gregori and Mala retire to the house where Mala returns to her slumber, and Gregori sits quietly on watch.  An hour later, maybe more, Ivette murmurs something unintelligible in her sleep.  A slight breeze whistles through the thatching overhead.  All is quiet.

"...are here...not...," Ivette sleeptalks again.  In the distance, a door creeks and smacks.  "...-eep...one nmm...."  A ruffle of heavy woolen fabric and groan in the dark.  A muffled thap thap thap is barely audible through the sod walls.

Gregori

Gregori grabs his staff and then gently places a hand on Mala's shoulder, hoping to quietly wake her.  He often glances at the door to the house as he is doing so.

Mala remains sound asleep for the moment as the gentle thap thap thap of feet crescendos to fortonoando before suddenly halting in their entirety.  All is silent.  The feeling of a hundred eyes staring at you through the mirky night hangs palpably on the chilly air.

Mala, you don't wake up, despite Gregori's prodding.

Gregori

Gregori grips his staff in both hands, readying himself to clock anything that comes in the door.

Does this require a fright check?  It feels like a fright check is in order.

Gregori finds himself quite uneasy about this entire affair.  The silences continues to reign over the longhouse while the two women remain sound asleep.  Several tense minutes pass in utter silence before the snese of unease begins to fade.  In that time, you neither hear, nor see anything of note.

Gregori

After some time passes with nothing apparently coming through the door, Gregori sits back down, but keeps his staff in hand.

I'm imagining that this moment of tenseness took something out of Gregori.  Does he need to make some sort of check to remain awake for the duration of his watch?

OOC:  He's not so sleep-deprived that he requires checks yet.  Honestly, I'm going to do some forum-diving to see if there's any systems for trackign stress or mental fatigue.  I think that sort of thing is really more appropriate to this sort of situation.

Like a gargoyle perched on the long-forgotten eves of a Byzantine catherdral, Gregori sits on his haunches, facing the door and leaning on his staff.  Neither gush of wind nor flap of alighting bird detracts form his vigilance as his eyes attempt to pierce the darkness.  So it is, that Gregori waits, like a coiled snake watching for prey, until the first light of dawn sets the cocks to crowing.

Mala stirs fitfully in her slumber.  Dark dreams of a dismal, wind-swept plain beneath dark, lightning-wracked skies haunt her sleep.  In the distance, a tall obsidian tower streches endlessly toward the center of the whirling mass of mirky, purpureal clouds; the flickering effulgence of the lightning reveals singular Stygian shapes soaring about the hellish, skyward-thrust spire of stone.  Alone staring at the great obilisk, Mala stands scoured by the hot, sandy winds as if somethign is requiring--no, demanding--her attention.  Slowly, though, the sky lightens and the clouds clear.  The roar of the storm and crack of the thunder take on new sonic forms, as if an audial amoeba were morphing from one shape to another.  The whistling wind takes on a familiar tune.  The rumbling thunder takes on a familiar five-beat rythm.  Mala blinks once or twice, to find herself in Ivette's longhouse with a rooster crowing nearby and Gregori whistling a song from her childhood.

Mala

Mala glares at the rooster.  "Joy, shadow dreams already."  She looks at Gregori.  "How was the watch?  I didn't do anything funny to you did I?"

Gregori

Gregori slowly swivels his head from staring at the door to the house.  His voice sounds somewhat unnerved as he reports, "Something was outside.  You wouldn't wake up." He then returns his gaze to the door.

Mala

A light feathering of embarrassment flickers across her face.  "Ah good, we are still just associates.  Dark dreams have made me awaken in the strangest places."

Gregori

Gregori looks confused at Mala and stands up, gathering his bow.  "I don't think it's still out there, but I'm gonna look now."  He then nocks an arrow and tosses open the door.  Once the door is open, he half-draws the arrow, aiming at the ground in case a villager is milling about and steps out to look around.

What you see sends shivers down your spine.  All around the longhouse are fresh footprints, not of animals, but of barefoot humans.  In the fields, women are already beginning to tend to the fields.  You feel a cold hand alight on your shoulder.

Mala

Mala pulled her clothing together and tightened it.  She headed out a few paces behind Gregori.

Gregori

Gregori asks, "Your hands are very cold this morning, are you ok?" while turning to see why Mala has put a hand upon his shoulder.

Gregori turns to find Mala pulling her clothes more tightly about her person and Ivette straightening her bed.  The cold embers of the fire rest beneath the caldron where they choked the longhouse with smoke the night before.  Ivette looks up and asks, "Is everything alright?  You seem upset."

Normally this would be hardly true, but after last night's events and this occurrence, Gregori is anything if not upset.

Mala moves to the door to peer outside at whatever had Gregori so entranced before his sudden words.  She sees about the house hundreds of fresh human footprints in the dirt.  They appear to be too small to be that of grown men, but most too large to be that of children.

In the distance, a male voice shatters the intense atmosphere.  "Feed not my doves! Score ear roses are near! Adorning trouble will befall your doves and ham yet, while Aiwey are living!"

Gregori

Gregori sees how far away Mala is and shivers with a look of mild fear crossing his face.  "Never mind what I said about your hands."  He then looks at Yvette, "There was something out there last night - you two slept through it.  I couldn't wake Mala."  His voice is tinged with fear as he recalls the previous evening.

Gregori draws his bow to the most he can draw it and hold it drawn while walking.  He carefully steps around the barefoot tracks so as not to disturb them and starts walking toward the direction of the lunatic's voice.  He uses a soft voice, "Mala, let us see if we can find this lunatic.  Maybe he escaped from whatever's happened to the rest of the men."
