Mala

"Did I come by at a bad time?"  She walkes carefully out into the clearing looking for the staff.  Pulling her cloak loose on that side to hide the fact her hand is still on her sword.  She ventures into the clearing and locates the staff.  After retreiving it heads back to the young man.  Her stride is confident and smooth, no invitation to it.  She swings the staff up to about hand level and offers the end of it, with a smile.

Gregori

"No, not at all. Thank you," Gregori says as he receives his staff and leans on it a bit.  He looks at the newcomer for a moment with concentration, as if trying to remember a distant memory, though he is yet a young man, surely not much older than 20 if that.  He then makes a stiff, out of practice, yet not offensive bow as if from student to sensei in a water clan dojo.  "I am Gregori.  May your blade be slow to be unsheathed yet quick as the spring river when needed."  His speech and courtesy seem quite out of place with his scraggly beard and clothing made from mismatched animal skins.

Mala

"May your be as quick as a raindrop, and as gentle as a spring shower.  While not the proper reply to the original greeting, there is a bright sparkle of mischief in her eyes.  "How do you know that greetings?"Spoken in clan speech. She does not release the grip on her blade, since he is obviously injured, something had to make those injuries.

Gregori

Gregori shakes his head but smiles.  "That is not what I expected to hear.  Is it because you are a woman?  I do not understand enough to know what you asked."  Gregori does not appear to be freshly injured, though he does lean on his staff somewhat.  Gregori looks at the newcomer, currently standing where he had slept the night and shakes his head with a blush.  "Forgive my manners.  You've entered my roof, such as it is, please allow me to offer a guest-gift now, though my thought is late."  Gregori puts up his bow and slowly reaches into his belt pouch, offering a small rough cut piece of amethyst to the newcomer.  I hope my feeble gift does not offend.  I also hope I can find more - it is right to offer the gift, but I was hoping to trade that stone for more arrowheads at this nearby village.  Oh well, I'm sure I'll find something.

As this conversation unfolds, Gregori takes in the surroundings, hoping to see something that might indicate a source of other gemstones or possibly some valuable herbs.  Prospecting 11, Naturalist 9, Survival(woodlands) 12, each at -1 due to his nightmares, so 10, 8 and 11 respectively.

"I hardly know you, I am unable to take that." She smiles a bit satisfied about something.  "Be at peace stranger.  your night appears to have been rough.  There is a village a little from here."  She does not even reach for the gem.  But rubs her finger tips along her pant leg.  "While its pretty, Its very pretty, its not in a color I am able to put to use."  Her hands come away from her blade, the injured seems to be at ease.  "You offered me a gift because I entered your dwelling."  She points up toward the open sky.  "Your shelter has no Roof, it does not count."

Gregori

Gregori chuckles a bit and puts the amethyst away remembering something his father taught him - when the offered gift is turned down with no intention of rudeness, a gift not possible to refuse must be offered, whether they recognize the gift as such or not.  He then remembers back to one day many years ago after weapons training when he and his father's retainer sat outside together enjoying the new spring day as a falcon came down to grab a fish out of the water right in front of them.  His teacher nodded, considered the event for a moment and then spoke a haiku of his own making.

"Yes, I see that your eyes do not match this stone and indeed are far prettier.  They remind me of a poem I was told once:

Spring flowing river
Fishes swimming all around
The falcon eats well

Might I ask what brings the bearer of such pretty eyes out to this part of the wilderness?"

Mala

Mala closes her eyes for a few seconds.  She reopens them again before answering.  "My Master was slain.  I have to return the assassin's blade to his clan and then seek the Spirits of Battle for a judgment." Her words are dark as she speaks the last part.  She reaches up to brush off some of the debris that was still in Gregori's hair.  "Wind take me.  My apologies." She back steps two paces and extends her right hand away from her body.  With a slight bow, "I am currently apprentice Mala.  I had not introduced myself."  She announced her rank and her name, a concession.

Don't wait for me to interrupt.  So far, nothing out of the ordinary is happening in the woods.  I'll wanr you when the angry grizzly bear shows up.  I mean....if something should happen.  ;)

Oh, does Gregori want a Sex Appeal roll in there?

Gregori

Gregori's eyes lose some of their shine hearing Mala's story.  He nods, with eyes holding far more experience than his years might seem at this moment.  He them smiles a bit reaches up to pull out the twig caught in his unruly tangle of hair and hands the twig towards Mala, "Far be it for me to keep you from this bounty of nature.  There's no offense to be made.  I'm not sure where you're headed, but there's a small village nearby," Gregori waves vaguely in the direction of Tinton, "and I was headed there to do some trading.  Maybe we could walk together for a while?  I'll just need a moment to gather up my camp."  With this something clicks inside Gregori's head, "You're traveling very light to be this far into the forest," he says half as a question.  With this, a cool breeze blows through and Gregori shivers a little, "That cloak looks like a good idea," as he walks toward his camp to get his bearskin cloak and gather his things.

No sex appeal needed - and let's have it that Gregori delivered the pretty eye thing a touch awkwardly.  He left civilization and started living off the land around the age of 14 - early 14, old enough to have been aware of how men flirted with women but not quite old enough to have had much practice.

"Any odd noises in the night.  Village near by lost a great deal of their menfolk to night stalkers.  Totally panicked by anything happening outside at night.  I was in the village last night."  She waits for him to finish packing up his gear.  "You might spend some of that pretty rock to get a decent shirt and pants."

Gregori

"I made these myself from animals I hunted myself.  Even the bearskin cloak came from a poor bear who got caught in a flash flood."  I remember father telling me that a thane must always look after his people.  And that a good thane has duty to all the people, not just those in his village.  "Why has their thane not put an end to the disappearances?  Has their thane perished too?  Are you traveling onwards or returning to the village?  I would walk with you if you are returning there."

Mala

Mala shrugs, "No man to take the message possibly.  I am as much of a stranger in these parts as you.  Though a bit better dressed."  She smiles out of friendly mischief.  She leads the way back to the town.  At the edge of town she smiles, "I am tasked currently, I will be back in about nightfall.  If anyone is to ask."

Gregori

Gregori looks over at Mala and thinks for a moment.  "You know, there's not likely to be any good trading here now.  What are you off to do - would a second help?"

Mala

"One of the village ladies lost her son a few days back.  I am seeking signs of his passing." Mala winces as the wind shifts.  "I however am reminded by the Spirits that cleanliness is needed.  I will go ask about a place to bathe."  She enters the village and heads to the head woman's house.  "Mistress of the house, I need to speak with you.  Is there a place to wash away the grime of traveling.  Possibly two places, another traveler has need as much as I."

Gregori takes in a slow breath through his nose and shrugs.  He then patiently waits for Mala's inquiry to be responded to.

OOC:  Um...Tinton is near a river.  You probably know that.  You may feel free to ignore this post if you like.

The woman looks up at you from her daily chores in her fields and says, "There's a river just over the rise east of here.  I'm surprised you didn't notice it when you went out this morning.  Did you find anything interesting?"

"I found a man.  Not one I know, probably not one you are missing.  I would not want to bathe before him."  Mala blushes a bit.  "I will be bathing if a man comes looking for me, um, direct him to the stream downstream from me, please."  She heads that way watching to make sure she is not followed or watched.

Gregori

Gregori ends up bathing in the river by leaving the village in the opposite direction as Mala.  He gives himself a quick wash and changes into his spare set of undergarments, while washing the set he wore into the village.  He then heads back to the village hoping to find a place to hang his wet, but clean undergarments.  He's nervous now, and tries to pay more attention to his surroundings than usual.

If anyone is out and about he will approach them.

Mala

Mala returns from her bath, feeling refreshed.  She makes another set of sweeps out side the village, looking for any signs of trails.  If there are people being taken from their village, they should leave tracks, that is unless the spirits are taking them.

There aren't any noteable trails outside of those of animals.  The women are all working in the fields, and some aren not doing too great of a job.  At the site of Gregori, several look startled, troubled, or hopeful.  Mala sparks little interest except for a friendly wave from Lina.  Gregori easily finds a fence to drape his garments over.
