Recruiting: Changing Breeds & Tomorrow People
« on: May 02, 2009, 03:52:39 AM »
On the "I Would Like To Play" board there were two games mentioned that people would like to play; the first was the The Tomorrow People, and the second was a Changing Breeds game.

I would be interested in running a small group in either one or as a game combining the two concepts.  I would be using the Hero System to do this as it is the only system I really have access to here in South Korea.

Would anyone be interested and in which concept?

I don't know much about Changing Breeds (though I can look it up I'm sure), but I'd be all for playing in a Tomorrow People game!

The idea would be for a game where the players represent a group of young people at an academy who are psionic and are working against an organization called the ESPer's Guild to protect others like themelves and humanity; or a game where the players represent a group of young people at an academy who are shapeshifters working against an organization called the Directive to protect others like themselves and humanity; or a group of young people at an academy who are either shapeshifters and or psionic working against both organizations.

Ooo. I really like the sound of the first idea. Though I suppose if it would attract more players the third idea combining both psionics and shapeshifters would work great too.

I'm willing to make it small or even a solo game.  Tell me what kind of character you'd be interested in.  As a side note, please realize that I'm in South Korea, so there is likely a huge time difference between us so the game will be kind o jerky as far as posts are concerned.  I'm usually asleep when most people on this board are up and am up when most people are asleep I do try to check posts during various points during the day and the night.

I understand about the time difference. I don't mind it at all.

As for the character I had in mind I'm thinking a girl who is probably just coming into her abilities. Maybe capable of low level mind reading. It'd be fun to play her break out into a full-on telepath in the game I think.

Okay, Beginning points would be 200 points with 50 points of disadvantages.  No power can have more than 40 active points, and no SPDs above 4 for psis without permission.  I'm limiting skill points to 50 points with a 13 cap on skill levels without permission.

With a few exceptions (primarily languages like Mung) literacy for skills are a given.

An appropriate disadvantage would be:  15   Social Limitation:  Teenager (Frequently, Major)

I don't have a copy of the system, though I'm sure I can adapt to it fairly quickly.  I do like how your setup sounds though!

Okay, sounds good.  Come up with a general history and background (the general population is unaware of the existence of either shifters or psis) and how you ended up at Hidden Falls.
What skills and interests does she have?  What powers besides telepathy, and how does she use the telepathy and I can convert it to the system.  PM it to me and I'll petition for a board to get started.

I've had a little experience with the Hero system in a pulp setting. The only problem I found was that the smoothness of the rules didn't really mesh well with the pulp feel.

I think it will work well.  I tend to "smooth out" rules that get in the way of story telling or the feel of the genre.  So far the biggest problem I've had with it has more to do with the way this board is set up than with the rules- and that being having to post a dice roll before I can see what the roll is.  But I'm learning how to do that too.

The problem as I see it was the the Hero system was too smooth for the clunkiness I expect of Pulp.

Ahhhh, well for my purposes, the system won't get in the way.  I use it for defining how things work, and if it can't define it the way I want it to, I MAKE it do it.  To me gaming is about story-telling, and I'm not going to let a system get in the way of that.

To be honest, I used to HATE the system- primarily because I thought it got too bogged down with trying to keep "game balance" that they sometimes forgot about how to tell a story.  It has gotten better with this edition, and for the most part, I simply ignore rules that get in the way of that.

So- what kind of changing breed do you want to play?  I put some general information my recruiting thread called Tomorrow People and Changing Breeds.

I too am more focused on story and character than rules. Regarding your breed question, I answered by PM.

I've narrowed my animal shape down somewhat, looking at non-wolf canines or large animal form (e.g., elephant, rhino, etc.)

Wow! Rhino caught me off guard. Hadn't thought of that one.  It's cool.  A little unsual, but would work.  Most shifters aren't herbivores, so that could be really interesting.

I'd only glanced at the "Land Titans" section of Changing Breeds when I though of were-rhinos, but a closer look showed that they are one of the Land Titan Breeds. Don't entirely recall the breed name, starts with A. Now I just need to come up with the rest of the character.
