Wow.....I really must exclaim that the existing excell spreadsheet for SM:P really is giving my the %^&*s!!

It has trouble removing TPs and sometimes after you 'set skills for next level" and then commence buying skills, the sheet doesnt tally spent DPs nor add the ranks!!

Its the Jonathon Dale sheet from ICE.

Anyone got a (better) working one?

You did well for your first time with the SM rule set.

We shouldn't be too far away from getting going now. I have pre-generated two characters (but still need to add programs), waiting on two builds (plus programs) and one character has been built (but need programs).

Needless to say I'll be working on programs this week.

Ive put some deck plans up of the Lady Mac.

Ive just got fractal mapper and thought I'd give it a go.
I'm recreating the plans from the descriptions in the book, but if  you think I've missed anything from a design point of view, please tell me.

Another mechanics question.

Let's say you land at an unfamiliar station, and some friendly soul datavises you a map (presumably even a basic map would support interactive queries and provide directions and etc.).  How does that work?  If you want to locate and go to a hopping bar, do you just "consult the map"?  Or does the map give a bonus to some skill that you'd need to use?  (Now that I ask I see there's a "Mapping" skill that I never thought to take!)  Also, would something simple like this map require an active slot in your nanonics to use, or is it kind of at the background level?

Mapping skill is to construct maps to use in navigation/astrogation. You dont need it to follow a map.

In the scenario you give above, you would land at the station, usually you would datavise the station processor for a map, which would be datavised back to you. I would rule that given you now had a map, you could make it to where you want to go without any troubel (aided by the fact you would have a big "you are here" on the datavised map).

Say you are given a map to an unihabited planet ( there is no net processor there to help you pin point you location). Then even with the map, you would need to use the navigate or orienteering skills to travel across the unknown land (probably with a bonus).

Viewing the map would take an active slot.

OK, thanks.

Mapping skill is to construct maps to use in navigation/astrogation. You dont need it to follow a map.

Yeah, but just for the record, the book suggests that Mapping is used to make or read a simple map, whereas Cartography "complements Navigation" (seems to be more like what you're describing).  I see things like that and suddenly worry that I don't have a skill required do something that I would normally take for granted like follow a map; I guess I'm still trying to figure out how the system works in practice.  :)

'Nother question.  Is there a skill for trying to convince someone of something, without paying cash (Bribery), goods (Trading), or just fast-talking your way past the issue (Duping)?  Let's say I go into a bar, they have an empty stage, and I want to talk the bartender into letting me play a quick gig that night?  I suppose I could make it Bribery or Trading by offering to do it for just a couple beers or something, or Seduction if I flash some skin -- but I'm wondering how a general attempt to convince would be handled.

Well duping is the nearest skill to try to convince someone of something they would not ordinarily do. Seduction can be emotional manipulation as well as flat out skin flashing.

Situations like this would be handled by roleplaying. Then (if needed)  a skill roll (duping) modified by the roleplaying attempt.

For the Lady Mac, what does the ZTT endurance of 4 jumps mean?  Is that without refueling?  Or what is it that has to be done after 4?

It means the ship can perform 4 ZTT jumps before the nodes must be re-charged (a process taking several hours).

So with a maximum displacement of 15LY/jump.....it can displace 60LY before the lengthy re-charge.

Note the jump limit is 4 total jumps regardless of the distance jumped. So even if the ship does 4 x 0.5LY jumps it must recharge.

Also the scale on the star map in wrong. Confederation space is roughly a spherical zone some 600 light years wide, with Earth at its centre.

So I thought I remembered from the book that someone was going to make a trip in under a week and that was considered fast.  It seems like the major delays are fine orientation on the target at the end of the trip (maybe also a few hours?), and a few hours to recharge every 40-60 light-years...  If you can make better than 100 light-years a day, what makes it take a week?  Was that example just literally going from one end of the confederation to the other?
