Background
Natei Konastas was born in 2255 to a nondescript family in the Centauran city of Makavarton; from the moment she could walk, she had an affinity for making things. It started with cooking, but she was soon seen fiddling with miniature power systems; no one in her family knew where this affinity for engineering came from, but they could see she found true beauty in the creation of energy.

Natei spent two years after completing her secondary education contemplating her choice of careers; she eventually chose Starfleet and was accepted. She graduated near the middle of her class, but her seeming indecisiveness in high-stress situations prompted her detailers to assign her to the soon-to-be retired USS Drake (NCC-1553) in 2279.

Assigned as a power systems engineer, Natei was placed in charge of power distribution, often standing watch on the bridge engineering station. She proved capable in her specialty, but lacked detailed knowledge in other engineering specialties, so the chief engineer directed the ensign to pursue an "aggressive" cross-training program. The training paid off as she showed an affinity for all engineering fields.

She was awarded the Prentares Ribbon of Commentation for her bravery and competence during a particularly nasty skirmish with a Klingon scout vessel in 2280, detecting and quickly preventing a potentially disastrous systems overload that would've crippled the ship. The commendation led to her promotion to Lt. j.g. that year.

She received a Silver Palm when she rescued three crewmen from a trapped compartment, during an impulse reactor accident in 2282, despite receiving several burns in the initial accident. She went on to be essential in the repair of the reactor, preventing the ship from having to return to spacedock for repairs (which, she maintains, would have probably ended the ship's service life).

When the ship was originally scheduled for decommissioning, both the chief engineer and assistant chief engineer left for other commands, leaving Lt. j.g. Konastas as the senior engineer remaining. During the yard period, Starfleet ultimately decided to promote her to the rank of lieutenant and the position of chief engineer.

Following her actions during the whale probe incident and subsequent rescue of USS Saratoga in 2286, Nat was awarded a commendation and given a choice assignment with the Starfleet Corps of Engineers.

Personality
Natei is typical for her species, attractive yet aloof, calm yet empathetic. She finds beauty in raw power, and regards her engines as "works of art." As such, she's quite diligent about keeping them in top working order. Natei is new to command, despite being a veteran officer, and sometimes finds it difficult to assert her newfound authority. Like most Centaurans, she's often deliberate to a fault; she works hard to overcome that trait and be responsive to snap orders, though she doesn't always succeed.

She has a few friends on the ship, and insists on being called "Nat" by those she chooses to add to that small circle. She also loves to cook, even though she's nothing more than a "gifted amateur," and is always trying to get her fellow officers to try her latest creations.
