Episode 1.2: Scratch & Lugs
« on: December 23, 2009, 09:05:15 PM »
"Captain's Log, Stardate 8287.4; Lt. Cmdr. Treyva reporting:

"We have just completed a month's worth of exploring stellar phenomena near the Klingon border. We were about to put in to Deep Space Station K-7 for a little R&R when we received a call from Starfleet Command..."

"Incoming message from Starfleet Command, sir," Miguel reports.

"On screen."

The image of Rear Admiral Preston Vandenboogard, Chief of Starfleet Operations, appears on the viewer.

"Congratulations, Commander Treyva, you and the Drake have won the 'honor' of retrieving this years' contributions to the 'Jim Kirk Memorial Slush Fund.' You are ordered to proceed to Sigma Iotia II, make contact with Drs. Carey and MacIntyre, check in with the Mr. Okmyx and the advisory committee, and retrieve the proceeds for deposit at Starbase 6."

Many officers know of the so-called slush fund, the colloquial term used for the Federation's "cut" of the proceeds earned by the Sigma Iotia II syndicate, which the famed officer had "negotiated" out of the Iotians in 2268. The cut has been used to fund the Federation's efforts of the past 17 years to guide the Iotians to a more-ethical society.

In 2276, the cultural specialists introduced a parliamentary-style advisory committee comprised of craftsmen, utilities workers, media workers, molls and enforcers who are not part of the syndicate leadership hierarchy, acting as a form of legislative branch. Unions had been formed around the various professions by 2279, creating a second check against the power of the syndicates, which was learning the art of negotiation and compromise that doesn't involve the use of a sub-machine gun.

The Federation has been encouraged by the results and expected to introduce the concept of an independent judiciary by the end of the decade, with hopes that the Iotians will be ready to establish a constitution in 20-30 years.

Sigma Iotia II is about 12 days away at Warp 4.

Treyva sat, bemused, in the command chair and stared at the starfield for a moment once Admiral Vandenboogard's communique ended. "Well...this could be interesting. Cathy, plot us a course for Sigma Iotia II."

The young navigator's hands danced over her console for a moment.  "Course plotted and laid in, sir."

"Very good. Harry, take us to warp four." He rose from the chair and walked the short distance to the tactical station, where his acting XO, Lt. Garav, sat immersed in the intricacies of the crew duty roster. "Annoying, isn't it?"

The young Andorian glared at him. "I have no idea how you did this for so long."

Treyva smiled. "I don't have to sleep; it makes things easier sometimes." He leaned against the console and crossed his arms over his chest. "It was actually the duty roster that I wanted to talk to you about. Are you aware that Lt. Kiunya in Sickbay is a former security crewman?"

OOC: Nolmir, I hope you don't mind me giving you something to do...for that matter, I hope Davy doesn't mind, either....

"...Ah, I remember something about that; it seemed like a rather unusual change of department. Why, if you don't mind my asking? Do you have a crew transfer in mind?" the Andorian asked with a hint of a smile.

Kiunya entered the Officer's lounge/mess, his eyes focused on a padd when he entered the room with a proposal from Petty Officer Kalsi regarding the scheduling of the next training session for the medics & orderlies.  He knew some coffee would be much appreciated by those in sickbay, and made his way towards the adjoining galley to get a thermos/vacuum flask of "joe".

Treyva shrugged. "Not as such. Dr. Gordon tells me he's a damn good nurse, and I'm not about to get into an argument with her about taking him away and putting him somewhere else. But he does have security training, and he was in the top 5% of his class at OCS when he came back from his nursing training. Good tactical thinker, according to his records. I don't think a bit of cross-training would hurt. He could pull a duty shift on the bridge, or with a security detail. He could possibly train some of your men on emergency medical and first aid techniques, that sort of thing.

"What do you think?"

EDIT: Tweaked a little bit of clumsy dialog; nothing consequential, it was just bugging me a little. Amended the amount of time since we left Spacedock to vague it up a little and to take into account some of the "...and then he went to..." time that's been spent getting to starbases and the Mutara sector and suchlike.

Kindly acknowledging his fellow officers in the mess/lounge, he put his PADD away, in case others wanted to engage in small talk, then entered the Galley.
"Good'ay Casey, what can I do you for?", Petty Officer Auroan said while working on what appeared to be a stew in an industrial sized pot.
"Oh nothing, just came down to get a thurmos of coffee for sickbay.", Kiunya responded.
Not even looking up from what she was doing, "Help yourself, you know where everything is.", she replied warmly.
"But don't you go forgetting to bring the thurmos or mugs back.", she added in a manor that reminded Casey of his mom on a bad day,"The last thing I need to do is come up short on inventory."
"Yes Ma'am.", and with that he went about getting what he needed, and made his way out through the officer's lounge again.  One hand carrying the thermos, the other with a net bag with enough mugs for those in sickbay.

Garav looked up from the duty roster, giving Treyva his full attention. "That sounds like a good idea, sir. My men, I mean, the security department could use some training in first aid, and having Lt. Kiunya take part in security department activities would probably be conducive to crew unity."

Garav glanced down at the duty roster. "He should be on duty in sickbay right now, sir. Would you like me to go talk to him about it?"

Treyva nodded and stood up. "By all means. Be sure to keep Dr. Gordon in the loop, and let me know how it works out." With that, he walked back, in the general direction of the science station.

Garav handed the tactical station over to one of his subordinates and took the turbolift. Once he arrived at sickbay's deck, he made his way through the corridors, acknowledging cewmembers as he went.

The doors to sickbay opened and Garav stepped through, his hands clasped behind his back, and glanced around the room. "Is Lt. Kiunya here?" As he waited for an answer, he nodded in Dr. Gordon's direction, acknowledging her with a smile.

The doctor looks up from a patient and shakes her head negatively. "He was picking up some coffee for us; he should be back in a bit. Is it something I can help you with?"

Garav shook his head. "It's nothing too important. I just wanted to talk to him about some possible shift changes. I'll wait for his return."

Garav glanced around the sickbay. "How are things in sickbay, doctor?" he asked, trying to make some small talk until Kiunya returned.

"Running smoothly, Lieutenant," she replies warmly. "Chief Nnamdi should be able to return to duty tomorrow; his shoulder is regenerating nicely."

OOC: Chief Nnamdi injured his shoulder while sparring with another crewmember.

Nodding to a few other officers in the mess/lounge he made his way back to sickbay.
After a few minutes, with coffee and cups in hand, he entered the sickbay.

Treyva leaned against the sciences console and faced his acting Chief Science Officer, Lt. Paula Tyler. "And how are you doing this fine day?" he asked her.

She leaned back in her chair and looked up at him. "To be honest, boss...I've probably been better."

Treyva felt he knew what was coming; he'd worked with Paula for a little more than four years now, and felt he knew her fairly well. Still, he needed to be sure. "Go on," he said, his tone taking on the concerned tenor he occasionally used with Miral, his precocious eldest daughter, when she began questioning her life decisions.

She fidgeted a bit, ran her fingers through her short auburn hair in a gesture which the Denobulan had learned indicated frustration, and said, "I'm not sure why I'm sitting here instead of one of the other science officers. Mike Welch is easily as qualified as I am, if not more so, as a for-instance."

He'd been right. Self-doubt had plagued Paula Tyler as long as he'd known her, and he suspected for a significant portion of her life before then. He smiled at her and said, "Are you questioning my judgment, then?" A look akin to horror crossed the younger woman's face, and he cut her off before she could say anything. "Question withdrawn. I was trying, unsuccessfully, to crack a joke, and I apologize." He crossed his arms across his chest and said, "You've got the most peculiar mixture of ambition and self-doubt I think I've ever encountered. What makes you think you're not qualified to be CSO?"

"I've got virtually no grounding beyond the basics in planetary sciences, my chemistry is weak compared to much of the science staff, and I can't seem to find a specialty in physics that suits me," she said. "I bounce from section to section within the department. I'm a dilettante, not a scientist."

Treyva laughed at this. "Have you ever really taken a good, long look at my CV? Be my guest, read it over some day. You'll find that I've never really settled down in a specialty, either. Circumstances of duty forced me to learn more chemistry than physics, for instance, but my natural inclination is to generalize. It's done me a great deal of good in my career, given me chances that I might not have had if I'd been more specialized." He looked at her and smiled, and said, "I chose you as my deputy because I saw a lot of me in you. You've been in just about every section in the department since you've been on the Drake. How long were you aboard before you made your first application to be a section chief?"

She looked puzzled for a moment before responding. "About six months, I think. Why?" She'd been turned down for that, but reapplied three months later and found herself the physics section chief.

"Mike Welch was here for nearly two years before he applied. He only got the chance because you applied to be deputy CSO when Coleman left the ship during the refit." He watched her expression brighten a little as that soaked in. "You're one of the best officers on the ship, Paula, and I've got every faith in your ability to run the science department on this ship with at least as much success as I did while you're sitting in my chair."

She relaxed at that. "Thank you, sir."

Treyva relaxed, too, happy that this particular piece of encouragement had worked out. "So," he said, changing the subject, "what do you think about the mission so far?"

She smiled. "I think I'm enjoying it, for the most part, sir. It was a little weird when we put in to Starbase 17 a few weeks ago; I hadn't been there for nearly four years, and to come back as a visitor...just seemed a little odd." She thought for a moment, then added, "I could do with fewer Klingons turning up, but other than that...it's been good. We've made a lot of good scans, done a lot of good science out here."

Treyva smiled and rose. "I agree. I'll see what I can do about fewer Klingons, then. Keep up the good work, Paula." With that, he walked back to the command chair and sat down, taking a moment to sign the log summary that Yeoman Waymire had for him.

"Good to hear." Just then, the doorway to sickbay opened and Kiunya stepped through.

"Ah, Lieutenant, just the person I'm looking for," Garav said. The Andorian had been making concerted effort to be more friendly with the crew since being named First Officer. "I have something that I'd like to discuss with you. Would you prefer that we talk now, or over lunch?"

"Morning, sir.", Kiunya responded inquisitively.
"Is something the matter, sir that it needs to be discussed in private?", he continued as he moved towards the wall, to place down the mug and net of mugs. "Excuse me, where are my manners. Coffee, sir? Doctor? Chief?", he said while pulling out a cup out of the net.

From where he was he didn't see the three enlisted orderlies on duty.

The mugs themselves were specific to the ship, as far as Kiunya was able to gather.  The ship's seal center on the side of the cup, of the standard design that came about in the 2270s with the ships name on the upper ring, and registry on the lower ring.  However, rather than the standard lining that would line lip of the cup and accent the base, a pattern of colors consisting of the interchanging hues of blue, white, and black were used.

Garav politely waved off the offer of a mug of coffee.

"No, nothing like that. The captain and I have just been looking over the duty rosters, and it has come up that you previously served in security. I'd like to know if you'd be up to helping to train security personnel in first-aid, and perhaps serve a few shifts at tactical on the bridge?"

Pouring a cup of joe for anyone who wanted one, or failing that for himself, he pondered the idea for a moment.
Although he was sure he could do it, it'd been almost half a decade since he had practiced his old trade.  Yet, at the same time, he was pretty sure it was like riding a bike; that once he started riding again, he'd fine his balance.
"Anything I can do to help Sir.  That is, as long as the good Doctor here is OK with it." Kiunya then turned his head to the Lieutenant Gordon, offering the cup he just poured.

OOC:She's probably busy with Chief Nnamdi

Surprisingly, the good doctor is walking over to the pair; she takes the coffee with a warm thank you and takes a sip before responding. "So, you want my head nurse to fill in on the bridge?" she asks rhetorically. Pondering the idea for several moments, she nods her head once with certainty.

"He can, as long as neither the training nor the bridge watch interfere with his primary duties," Katrina answers, her eyes darting from the Andorian to the Eskimo and back again.

"Funny you should bring that up, Doctor.", The half Eskimo, half Samoan, responded with a bit of internal chuckle, while maintaining a strait face. "Petty Officer Kalsi was proposing providing cross training, to those Departments that wanted it, in basic buddy care skills. It wouldn't be to difficult since we're doing continuing traning for the medics."

OOC:I'd imagine that Petty Officer First Class Kalsi works the second shift, to provide a more senior individual while the head nurse, and CMO are away. Of course, he'd definitely be with one other nurse, and possibly the Lieutenant Hunter (depending whether he takes second or third shift), as well as three other enlisted medics/orderlies.
