Harry swivelled in his chair again.

"Can we see if we can obtain a course projection on the probe from Starfleet? Perhaps we'll be able to estimate a point of origin?"

Treyva nodded. "Excellent idea, Harry." Turning towards Garav's station, he asked, "Any luck with your inquiry, Garav?"

As the captain asks his question, data pops up on the weapons officer's screen. USS Saratoga, operating along the Klingon Neutral Zone, began tracking the probe in Klingon space. Data that arrived shortly after the planetary distress call was lost indicates two Klingon vessels were lost to the probe and two Federation starships and three smaller vessels were neutralized along its course.

The limited astrogation data available is included in the transmission.

OOC: You folks can make a Space Sciences (Astrogation) test to trace the course. Harry, Paula, Treyva and Kathy all have the same bonus (+8) to the test.

OOC: Okay, since you didn't roll for Paula or Kathy, I'll roll for Paula and Treyva; Renny can roll for Harry and Kathy, unless Davy objects (in which case he can ignore the rolls).

Treyva's Space Science roll
Rolling 2d6+8:
(6+3)+8: Total = 17

Paula's Space Science roll
Rolling 2d6+8:
(2+6)+8: Total = 16

As the telemetry was shunted to his console, Harry turned back to his instruments.

OOC: Yikes, the old dicebot has it in for Harry today. I won't spend a courage point here as I may have more dire need down the line.

"Perhaps..." Garav murmured as he looked over the data. "It appears that the probe was first detected by the USS Saratoga in Klingon space. Two Klingon vessels, two Federation vessels, and three smaller vessels were reported lost to it. I'm shunting the astrogation data to your consoles."

Treyva found an unused console and accessed the data from Garav's inquiry as Paula did the same at Science. "The Saratoga was along the Neutral Zone. Are we close enough to render aid?"

OOC: I'm thinking the astrogation data we're analyzing already should tell us that, but if you want another test, let me know and we'll roll some more.

EDIT: Tweaked dialog a little, made him a little more certain about things.

Yeah, but you didn't roll for Kathy. Perhaps the dicebot is in her corner this time and she'll get a monster roll. Couldn't hurt....

OOC: Excellent idea

Harry leaned over to Kathy Chen who was manning the navigation post.

"Kath," he whispered. "Can you run these numbers as well? I'm not sure about these results?"

Kathy lifted her eyes from her own display and smiled at Harry.

"Sure thing, Harry. It will feel good to do something useful right about now."

The four officers discover (TN10) the course seems to be on an arc, rather than a direct line. Treyva and Paula extrapolate the course (TN15), but don't find any planets within the Klingon sphere of influence that would be likely origins; however, the course does pass through a void in the Archanis Sector, near stations Epsilon 1 and Delta 11.

The report indicates the Saratoga was operating on the Federation side of the border between the two stations, right along the probe's arcing course.

At his borrowed console, Treyva pressed a couple of keys. "Computer, tell me the key features of the Archanis sector." While waiting for the computer to assemble the data, he turned to Science and said, "Paula, how far are we from Saratoga's encounter with the probe?"

OOC: I'm thinking we're about to go on a rescue mission, gentlemen, unless I'm just completely misreading something.

In the meantime, I did ask the computer a question so I figure I better roll to see what it tells me. Computer Use (Retrieve) test, +6 for skill level, +2 for specialty, +2 for Int modifier, for a total of +10.

OOC: You don't know the half of it, PG. ;evil)

The computer reports in its standard feminine voice that the Archanis Sector is mostly in Klingon territory. The worlds Archanis IV, an important Federation outpost on the border, and the unremarkable and little-explored Ajilon system about three light-years from Archanis, are on the Federation side of the border. Stations Epsilon 1, 2, and 3 guard the border, listening to Klingon communications chatter.

The only significant Klingon world in the sector is Ganalda IV, a "colony" (read: conquered) world. A long void stretches through the sector, separating Ganalda from the Cursa and Ardana systems of the neighboring Donatu sector. The void is usually circumvented by going above or below.

"We're about a day away from their last reported position at Warp 6, a little less if we take her to Warp 7," the science officer replied as her console beeped. She checked the alert and added, "Sir, I have the modified communication signal back from the modeling lab."

OOC: I'd be alarmed if I did.

Without hesitation, Treyva turned towards the helm. "Kathy, set a course to the Saratoga's last known position. Harry, as soon as she has that laid in, take us to warp seven." He then turned to communications. "Miguel, put the translation on the back burner for the time being. Try to contact the Saratoga and tell her that help is on the way."

He looked to his exec and said, "Garav, alert sickbay that we're going to attempt rescue of the Saratoga and that there may be casualties; Dr. Gordon will want to be prepared tomorrow. Take us to yellow alert and get some rescue training drills going so everyone is ready."

Finally, he turned to Paula again and said, "Yes, by all means, let's hear that signal, please."

Garav busied himself carrying out the captain's orders. At least organizing the drills kept his mind off of what was happening to Earth.

Harry waited for Kathy to plot the course and then flash it over to his board. He laid in the course and took the ship to warp.

"Warp Seven, sir." He reported calmly.

The crew turns to their individual duties, but stop when the haunting, echoing sounds play over the loudspeaker.

"This is what it would sound like about 250 meters below the surface of the ocean about 10 kilometers west of San Francisco," Paula offers quietly. "I think this is what they used to call 'whale song.' I remember hearing a 250-year-old recording of it once in my zoology class at the Academy."

"It's beautiful...so lonely," Kathy muses. "Does this mean the probe is trying to talk to whales?"

The ship smoothly accelerates to its maximum sustainable speed, though a slight shudder is felt as the Drake exceeds Warp 6.7. The bridge engineer quickly adjusts the power curve to compensate.

Treyva mused on this for a moment, then made his way to the front of the bridge. "It's possible, Kathy; with an alien intelligence, especially at such a distance, it's hard to tell a motive."

Raising his voice slightly, he said, "Ladies and gentlemen...I know this is not what you want to be doing. Earth is home for most of you, and she's in danger. You want to rush in on a white horse and save her...and I can't blame you for that. Were this happening to Denobula, I'd want the same thing.

"I don't know if there's anything we can do for Earth directly. The President's message, and the meager supporting evidence we have, all suggest that it would be futile for us to rush in and confront the issue head-on, if we were any closer to the planet to begin with.

"What I do know, however, is that this probe has disabled a number of starships en route to Earth, and one of those ships is close enough to us that we can possibly be of assistance, and we are obliged to render that aid if we can. That's what we're going to do; over 300 of our comrades are counting on us. Let's not let them down."

He walked back around the operations deck and down into the command well, stopping at his command chair without sitting. He did his best to maintain a comforting visage, and he hoped that his speech had been at least a little reassuring to the bridge crew. Pressing the intercom, he said, "Bridge to Engineering."
