All firearms being illegal is within the last five years. Before then they were monitored and controlled for a while. So it is within the realms of possibility that he would have been hunting and would know how to shoot. Especially since he's a rural person. And for that matter, the sheer number of guns in existence in the U.S. would make it take quite a while for all of them to be collected.

Ah, ok. Makes it a bit different.

Would the government tell people what they would do with the firearms? Collected and cut up into scrap?

All privately held firearms were declared illegal.

They began with registering pistols in the early 1993. Every person who owned a pistol had so many days to take it to the local sheriff and have it test fired, with a spent round being placed into the envelope with all the information about the pistol.

After a year's grace period ownership of an unregistered pistol was a felony. Any unregistered pistol that was discovered was taken in by law enforcement agencies and destroyed.

3 years later in 1996 they began tracing the sales of any ammunition that could be used in a pistol, and limiting the number of rounds an individual could have to 500 of any caliber. They also extended the registration to assault rifles and sniper rifles.

In 2000, the only way a person could by a new pistol or assault rifle was by being a member of law enforcement or the military. All others could only buy used pistols from registered dealers, and could only sell theirs to registered dealers. Many communities had banned any ownership of them, registered or unregistered. Many cities extended the firearm ban to all guns.

In 2005, the registration of hunting rifles and shotguns was voted into effect. Now all firearms a person may own had to be registered. And the amount of ammo was cut down to 100 rounds of any caliber that a person had registered in his name. All of the ballistic test rounds have been put into a national database.

In 2008, hunting was banned by Federal Law, and since hunting was banned, there was no need for rifles and shotguns. Private ownership of any firearm by someone not in the military or a member of law enforcement is illegal under any circumstances. All weapons turned in and confiscated were to be sent to be destroyed. Only military collectors who showed that their weapon was no longer in good working order were allowed to keep their weapons. Ammunition is no longer sold to private individuals.

This begs the question: What about bow hunting? Crossbows and normal compound bows?

Those are of course still possible. Crossbows not so much since they are restricted to rifle season, however many people bow hunt because they have a much longer season.

So is hunting banned outright or just banned with firearms?

No, it is banned outright as well. But it is a recent ban, within five years. So he could have grown up hunting with whatever weapon.

One of the perks of a rural character. Course some skills will be harder for him to gather then someone from the city.

Hmmm....that 25 skills not counting carpentry (making 26)

If I have to allocate 10 for carpentry to give a skill of 16

Leaves me 7 points as it stands.

Cull bow, leave xbow (24)

half point in each is 12 points. Still 5 in the red.

Could scrap hard to kill?

Well, you will have to sell me on why a rural guy would have streetwise.

And distilling is not a common skill. Not all us hillbillies make shine.

Well, you will have to sell me on why a rural guy would have streetwise.

Streetwise's basic explanation is "This is the skill of getting along in rough company". It doesnt seem to me to be in any particluar location.

"A successful Streetwise roll can (among other things) let you find out where any sort of illegal “action” is; which local cops or bureaucrats can be
bought"

I think the above can be applicable to rural as well as urban. I can can it if you like, just makiung my case.

And distilling is not a common skill. Not all us hillbillies make shine.

OK. I can can that.

Your comment made me think of this cartoon

Point taken. Streetwise can stay. Plan on making him a meth dealer?

Had to look up the cartoon to see why it was funny. Heh. Now I get it.

Not a dealer, but he likes a good time and I see him a hard partier who would indulge in that. Good to have friends in low places for these things.

Its certainly very ethnically German here. Not sure how I feel about being called a hillbilly by some Sydneysider.

It's funny here. There are several towns here that are ethnically German. My hometown is like that. Lot's of Hoffmeisters, Lichtanniggers, Hoffman etc.

But here where I live now it's all Scotch Irish. (I fit in much better heh.) There are still towns here where they speak with a German accent.

I didn't realize Aussies even had hillbillies.

Someone who works as a contractor and a known carouser could very easily have connections on the low side. That all works.

No doubt its a different style of hillbilly, but yes. Plenty of isolated countryside to be had.

You still hear some locals speaking German, English with thick accents, or  Barossadeutsch. In my parents day they spoke that as their first language.
