Background

Luke Adams is a 55 year old environmental geologist who works as a consultant that helps clients work through bureaucracy (state and/or federal) to obtain permits and approvals for various projects.  He is good at his job and has been doing it long enough to have developed a reputation among the regulators both state and federal.  He is 5 foot 8 inches tall and weighs 225 pounds.  In addition to being fat, he is near-sighted and wears glasses.  The glasses, along with his wild and somewhat straggly red hair give him a bit of a mad scientist look.

Long ago he spent time in the boy scouts and eventually earned became an eagle scout.   His experiences in scouting led him to become an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, fishing and camping.  Having spent much of his life hunting and shooting, he sees the prohibition on guns and hunting as the government overstepping its bounds.  He has a few older guns stashed along with reloading equipment and a supply of ammo.  He knows that the discovery of this will likely end his career, but feels compelled as an old school citizen to keep them. It is his second amendment right and duty, after all.

His college education in geology also provided a well-rounded background in biological and physical sciences as they applied to nature and ecology.  His book learning complimented what he learned while out camping and exploring.  Although not particularly religious, his time in nature has instilled a sense of spirituality, a moral obligation to be a contributing part of the environment rather than a leech sucking an existence out of the environment.

He began his career working for a large consulting firm in the suburbs of Cincinnati, Ohio.  He would commute from his home daily for about 45 minutes each way.  In 1973 he met a Stephanie and fell deeply in love.  They married in 1976 and three years later had their first son, Gunther.  His brother, Chance was born three years later.  With the birth of his first child Luke felt that a proper home was required.  After nearly a year of searching they finally found the perfect home.  It was a 100-year old farmhouse situated on a few acres.  There was a small pond and about 1 acre of the site was wooded.

Life was good.  Well at least for a while, then Stephanie was diagnosed with cancer.  The company was good about letting Luke telecommute several days a week, but in 1995 Steph passed.  The insurance money paid off the house and covered both boy’s college tuitions.

With the rising cost of fuel, improving technology and two teenage boys, he continued to telecommute most of the time.  After a few years, he realized that there was not much need for his employer; his needs were modest so even if he took a bit of a pay cut, the benefits of being self-employed far outweighed the need to report to someone else.

The farmhouse worked out well as it allowed him to have a sizable garden and keeps a few chickens and rabbits.   The boys are now in their late 20’s and early 30’s, and have moved on and begun their own lives  He has been able to make a decent living helping others navigate the increasing bureaucratic landscape; although land development has been pretty slack lately.  Recently, he has been able to find some clients who wish to permit the construction of large ponds on their property to raise fish.

While he cannot deny the obvious benefits of “going green” there is something about the way it is presented by the government that just “seems” wrong.   It is this “wrongness’ that has piqued his curiosity.
