Todd grins as the lock springs open.

Just like old times.

As he puts his gear away he replies, still with a grin, "Once or twice. Now lets get in there."

As he stands up Todd puts a hand under his shirt to check the pistol that is still stuck into the waistband of his jeans.

The security door opened with a bit of a creak. The team stood, looking down a long, dark hallway that was illuminated only by the "exit" sign that stood above the back door on the inside. There were several doors off the hallway--two on the left and one on the right, utility rooms, maintenance shops, and such most likely--and the hallway turned at the end sharply to the right, presumably leading to the lobby.

Gina stood at the back of the pack and went from watching the street to glancing furtively into the hallway. She was clearly afraid to go in, and there was no doubt that she wanted to get in and get this over with.

"Right," Robert says with a determined look on his face. "We need to approach this matter carefully. The little man said that the witch is living on the 4th floor with a white couple and their daughter. Presumably, they have fallen under her spell." Robert involuntarily clutches the door hanger now hanging around his neck. "I think we should avoid any elevator fun this time and take the stairs. There could be security cameras in the stairwell. Todd, would these be disabled by what you have done so far? If not, you need to take out those cameras as well." Robert pauses and frowns with a slight look of worry. "What we do when we actually reach the 4th floor is another matter. But let's just play it by ear and cross that river when we get there."

Robert steps into the dark hallway and starts looking around for a stairwell. He will keep an eye out for any security cameras.

"All the cameras in the place should be out. Lets just get up those stairs fast, before we get seen. Speed and surprise are our best weapons now."

Todd heads up the stairs, alert for anyone that may be about. His fists are clenched out of tension and his heart is racing.

The long hallway led past several shut doors before it turned right. The passage then dumped the investigators out in front of the entrance to the stairwell before turning back to the left and leading to the lobby.

The stairwell was reasonably well lit by exit signs and a single bare lightbulb on each landing. The stairwell was empty all the way up to the fourth floor, and the investigators quickly found themselves standing in front of the door that opened up onto the fourth floor hallway of the apartment building. They could see light coming from under the door; the hallway was apparently well lit.

Todd looks back at the others and wipes the sweat from his forehead.

"Y'all ready? Its all go after we open this door, ok?"

Gina pulled the strap of her purse across her neck so it was no longer hanging over one shoulder but now crossed her body. She unzipped the top and jammed her hand down into it. It looked as though she was gripping the handle of a knife.

"I'm ready," she said.

"Yup, ready," Robert wispers. "When we enter the appartment and locate the witch, we should probably focus all our effort on taking her down and try to avoid any skirmish with the family living there."

The hallway was brightly lit but otherwise looked a lot like the hallway at Comfort Place. It was long, straight, and lined with doors to the various apartments. The carpet that covered the hallway floor was made of brightly covered squares and showed sings of excessive wear. The doors to the apartments were decorated with "welcome" signs, wreathes, and other homey touches. From where they stood at the center of the hallway, the investigators could see the elevator which led to the front exit right across from them. They could also see two apartment doors, one to the left of the elevator and one to the right: 409 and 4011. The witch was supposedly hold up in apartment 418.

"It's this way," Gina whispered pointing out the obvious and gesturing to the right down the hallway. "The witch is in 418, all the way at the end."

Todd just nods and grits his teeth.
"No point messin' about. C'mon." he mutters.

He walks quickly down the right corridoor, heading for 418. His gaze is fixed forward and he's ready for any of the doors to open.

The team of "hunters" formed a single-file line and headed down the hallway. Todd led the way, and Gina brought up the rear. No one spoke; they tried to go as quietly as possible. When Todd was within just a few quick strides of 418, he heard the familiar rattle-thunk of someone opening a door.

The woman who opened the door to apartment 417 and Gina both let out gasps of surprise at the same time. Neither woman was expecting the other woman to be there. The woman from 417, a red-haired, fair-skinned, buxom woman of about thirty, stared for a moment, eyes wide, at the line of hunters heading for the end of the hallway. The woman looked more than startled, however . . . she looked afraid. Quickly, she shut the door.

A few more paces and Todd reached 418. The door looked ordinary, like all the others.

"We need to hurry," Gina hissed. "We've been seen."

The group reached the door and huddled quietly around it. There was a light coming from under the door, and they could hear the faint sounds of noise.  Talking? A TV perhaps. Gina pushed forward and gently reached out to try the knob. "It's locked," she said. "Kick it open!" The expression on Gina's face was new. It was no longer tentative or pained.  Her expression was down right vicious.

Todd hesitates for a second, and shakes his head at Gina as he holds a finger up to his mouth in a 'shhhh' sign.

Taking out his set of lock picks, Todd opens them to withdraw two slender metal probes which he inserts carefully into the lock and begins to work on the mechanism.

Todd conquered this lock with the same ease as the others. As he tripped the lock and turned the knob, the door cracked open. Lights were on inside, and the voices were louder--definitely the television. With his head so close to the door, Todd could hear no sounds of movement or people.

Todd quickly places his picks into his pocket as he strains to hear any sound of their quarry from within the apartment.

He points to the door and waves the others inside as he stands back up.

From the doorway the team could only get the basic layout of the apartment. The doorway opened into a narrow, brightly lit hallway with an opening on the right (looked from this angle like it might lead to the kitchen) and a door on the right. That door was closed and probably led to a bathroom or closet. Up ahead, the hallway opened into a living room. The lights were off in there except for a single table lamp and the flickering light from a television. The team could see the back and side of a couch and arm chair, but again . . . no sign of the witch or the apartment dwellers.

"Let's go," Gina hissed. She gave Josh as little shove, but he didn't move. He looked scared. Todd began to advance into the apartment. Gina pushed past Josh and followed close behind Todd with Robert behind her. They left the door to their left closed and unchecked and moved slowly to the open room on the right. Todd stuck his head around. It was a narrow kitchen that doubled back to the right out of sight. Todd took a few more steps forward toward the living room, to get the whole room into view when the silence was broken by a blood-curdling scream, followed by a crash.

A young girl walked out of the kitchen and right into Gina. No one was sure which of them had screamed . . . probably the girl, and then the girl dropped a glass full of milk which shattered on the floor. The kid looked to be twelve or thirteen, tall for her age, but very young looking, childish. She had earbuds in her ears and wore a tank-top and long pink cotton pajama bottoms. The white wire from her earbuds descended down her side into the over-sized pocket of the pajama pants. The girl had apparently been in the kitchen getting something to drink in the dark. She never heard the front door open. The music was too loud for that.

"Shut up!" Gina hissed. Faster than anyone expected, Gina jerked her hand out of her bag. She held a large kitchen knife. Gina grabbed the  girl by the throat and pushed her back into the kitchen, up against the counter. The girl's bare feet slipped in the milk, but Gina's frantic strength held her up. Gina held the knife raised in her first as though she might punch someone with it. She jerked the earbuds out of the girl's ears and then jabbed her hand right back to the girl's throat "Don't make a sound or I will kill you," she hissed. "Where is she?  Where's the witch? Is she here?  Just nod is she is."

Todd is alarmed bby Gina's visciousness. She wasn't messing around and things could escalate fast. He pulls the pistol from his waistband and covers the approaches from further into the apartment. Hopefully the girl would give them some information about the witch.

"Don't make a sound or I will kill you," she hissed. "Where is she?  Where's the witch? Is she here?  Just nod is she is."
The girl's eyes were wide. Clearly, she was trying not to scream again. Slowly and deliberately the girl turned her head from side to side in the universal sign for "no."  Then she shrugged her shoulders. "Let's go," Gina said. She reached up and grabbed the girl by her blond ponytail and jerked her forward toward the hallway. The girl whimpered as Gina pulled her bare feet through the broken glass and spilled milk. "Hush.  Don't make a sound," Gina hissed.

Gina saw that Todd had his gun out. "Let's go," she said, dragging the girl with her.

Todd follows them into the hallway staying stony silent, his jaw clenched with nervous energy. He covers their rear with his pistol.

"Where is she? Which way?" he whispers hoarsely at the girl.
