Title: Still Free Pitch: A crew fond of freedom struggling to make a living on the raggedy edge of the 'Verse. Genre: Space Western. Character driven 'episodes' in the Firefly/Serenity universe. System: Serenity RPG + Big Damn Heroes Handbook. Die-based traits will be used in this game (this will be explained further) Materials Needed: Serenity RPG, Big Damn Heroes Handbook optional. I can explain any differences between versions myself but the second handbook offers new traits, gear and other goodies. I believe they are still available from DriveThruRpg.com. Description: This Game will take place in the Firefly/Serenity 'Verse but by now you probably know this. It will deal with much the same themes as the series and movie: freedom, right and wrong, living on the edge of civilisation both literally and metaphorically and so on. I am very keen on these themes but that's about the extent of what's set in stone.
Ok, now that that's done let me get to the meat and potatoes.
First of all, let me tell you a bit about myself. I'm a moderately experienced Player and DM with a total gaming activity of 7 years or so. In addition i have about 3000 posts worth of experience (mostly DMing) in PbP role playing games on another site including a quite successful (if I do say so myself) Serenity RPG game that has recently jumped the 3500 post mark. i am a Firefly Fanatic. I have the series, the Movie, the comics, a sticker on my laptop, a bumpersticker on my car, a keychain and I have recently considered getting a browncoat. I also have all the books for the Serenity RPG.
I am a big fan of indie systems but i don't shy away from d20 games either. I really like the CORTEX system on which the Serenity Rpg is based. It isn't the most innovative system out there but it is a nice blend of very good ideas from all over the place that makes for realistic, fast paced games that players have great influence over.
When i run games i tend to start from a core idea or a core world (both conveniently provided here by Serenity) and, depending on what the Players want to do build adventures, plot lines and so on. When it comes to Serenity i usually try to think of every adventure as an episode of a series. Self contained (or at most stretching over two 'parts') but not isolated, each having its plot revolve around a character or two. An overarching theme or 'story arc' usually extends over several 'episodes' with recurring NPCs and the odd recurring Villain. I also use cameos and easter eggs, i absolutely love 'em. The story will start you off on a frozen Moon by the name of St. Albans, but that's about the extent of the plot that is set in stone so far.
If you guys are interested i will take between three and six players, both newcomers to the system and the 'Verse and veterans. You will only need the core book for the game though the Big damn Heroes handbook is also recommended. Selection will be done based on the amount of effort put into characters. A template for applications will be provided below. I'm primarily looking for decent roleplayers, not necessarily of the each post - a novel variety but people that understand good writing, creating tension, people that would rather fail a check and create an interesting situation than breeze through.
Required posting rate will be from 5 posts a week upwards, preferably post-a-day. Just to keep it moving along and interesting.
Getting into specifics, starting level will be Greenhorn with some possible extra advancement point allocation. Starting credits will be cut down to between a third and a fifth as I consider that the book is incredibly generous with the cashy money. However you will receive a ship based on the number of characters, their backgrounds and the relationship between them. I highly suggest you create some sort of common background for at least part of the PCs. Think Firefly.
Here's what I'm looking for in a nutshell:
Good, Imaginative Posters - I want people that can post imaginatively and consistently (at least Five times a week). Ok with 'more mature' stuff - the 'Verse is a nasty place full of slavers, terrorists and cannibals. Ain't for kiddies. Game will mostly be PG-13 though. Original but balanced character - I'm looking for intriguing characters that aren't cheap Serenity Knock-offs. Captain Ralcom Meynolds can sit this one out :) . I'm also not looking for supercool cyberwarriors. The technology in Serenity is very advanced in some parts but it is nothing more than a distant aid for the story. Knowledge of the 'Verse a plus - but not a requirement. Good Grammar a plus
Plese use this template for applications: 1. Name 2. Desired role 3. Appearance 4. Personality 5. Background ( PM any secret stuff) 6. RP Sample (100-300 words, optional) 7. Why you want to play the character 8. Timezone
My timezone is GMT+1. Feel free to contact me via PM with questions, critiques or comments.
Anyway, looking forward to gaming with you guys! Peace out.

U]Christian Monastery Slaughter[/U]
Over 100 people are dead or missing in a surprise attack on a small monastic retreat in the Blue Sun system. On Friday the 18th at approximately 21:00 hours the military corvette I.A.V. Impeccable received a red-coded distress signal from the small outpost on Muir’s second moon, Sheperds’ Mission . Upon arrival and deployment of a sizable contingent of troops twenty bodies were recovered in various stages of dismemberment.
Lieutenant Decker and his squad were the first on scene and had this to say:
“It was terrible, gutwrenching. There were body parts and blood everywhere, burned bodies, charred buildings. These <redacted> Independents have gone too <redacted> far. I’m sorry for my behaviour but the things we saw... We should have bombed them all to bits during the war.”
There are yet no news on the over eighty missing people. Local authorities attribute the attack to the mysterious ‘Reavers’, a yet unconfirmed band of raiders and pirates that have become the subject of many legends on the rim. Alliance officials present on the scene claim that a much likelier explanation are acts of terrorism perpetrated by former Independents in connection with the fifth Unification Day.
MP Albert Kwan, preliminary Parliament delegate (and prospective candidate) for Muir and environs called the act “a heinous crime against Union, God and Freedom” and swore to launch a full committee inquiry into the security status of Rim worlds. Muir and its satellites are scheduled for their first election cycle next year, four years after being taken off martial law.
Unification Day Festivities
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the official end of hostilities in the Unification War. Celebrations and parades have been announced all over the Inner worlds and an estimate of 12 billion people are expected to attend throughout the Union. In Londinium the Unity Festival, started three years ago by Ang Delvel, entrepreneur and son of MP Delvel is expecting over one million people to attend throughout its two weeks. The opening of the festival will be the traditional rendition of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. An airshow and fireworks display are also planned planetwide on Londinium. Parliament spokesman, MP Woo issued this vidlog earlier today:
"Ladies and gentlemen, today is Unification Day. The Unification Wary ended five years ago and with it the internal division of the five-star system ceased. Five years ago the separatist forces threatening to bring an end to our golden age of prosperity were beaten. September twentieth 2511 meant peace for all the worlds of the Union, peace and prosperity for all of known space.
When our ancestors fled Earth and settled this great system they had a lofty dream. A dream of honour, fairness and equality. A dream of democracy, unity, equal chances for all. A dream of peace. Today, ladies and gentlemen, that dream is reality. The end of the Independent movement meant the end of the last threat against the dream of our ancestors. Our great union now stands adamant, a testament of all that goodwill and democracy can achieve.
There are, of course problems, as there always will be after a war. The rebuilding process in the rim worlds is slow and hard but with our continued dedication and your continued support we will spread the wealth of the Core Worlds to the farthest reaches of the Union. With your support, my fellow citizens, anything is possible.
So, please, do not think of the end of the war as a victory, but an opportunity. Think of it as a chance for all humanity to rise to its full potential. Think of it, not as and end to a bloody conflict, but as the beginning of a new golden age of prosperity!
Long live the Union of Allied Planets!"
The 20th of September 2511 marked the end of the bloodiest conflict in recent history. The Unification War started by the blockading of trade routes in the Kalidasa system by the Independents and the unsuccessful attack on the Cruiser I.A.V. Nibelung saw heavy combat in both space and on the ground and the destruction of urban areas on several worlds. Today reconstruction continues, and major strides are being made as most of the destroyed areas are being quickly rebuilt. Cortex Access is Widespread even in the Rim and basic health and security are available in 95% of inhabited worlds. Unification Day sees the inauguration of several new large scale facilities every year. This year, the most anticipated is the inauguration of a new state of the art medical centre on Constance in the Kalidasa System as well as a new University on Meridian in the Blue Sun System.
There are however people that still resent the Unification. Every year, thousands of cases of violence are reported on Unification day, particularly bar violence. These are attributed to the so-called “Browncoats”, Independendent Veterans that still haven’t fully reintegrated. Alliance Veteran Services has recently started a goodwill program for these ex-soldiers but many are reticent to collaborate with what they see as their old enemy. Some, nicknamed Dust-Devils have even turned to terrorism.
Hunt For Roland Sharpe
Alliance authorities today reissued the bounty and outstanding warrant for Admiral Roland Sharpe. Roland Sharpe, a high ranking officer in the independent Navy has refused to lay down arms and surrender his ship at the end of the war inspiring a wave of copy cats and insurgents in the Border and Rim systems. The recently captured Thomas ‘Dust’ Garten, the inspiration for the terrorists calling themselves Dust Devils has cited Sharpe as one of his idols. Garten, captured earlier this month is to stand trial before a military tribunal in November.
Sharpe, however is still nowhere to be found. An aging but brilliant Londinium-educated tactician Sharpe was responsible for most of the early Independent victories, using small, manoeuvrable ships to great advantage against Union Carriers. At the end of the war as ranking officer Roland Sharpe was supposed to sign the peace treaty and retire but opted instead to go into hiding. Little is known about his whereabouts but sources link him to a recent spree of violent raids in the Outer Planets, some even claiming him as the mastermind behind the pirates known as ‘the Reavers’.
The Bounty on information leading to the capture of Roland Sharpe and his accomplices is 10000 credits.
