TtLG: January 2, 2010 Luke - Atwood, Kentucky

In the morning, it is overcast and looks like it may snow. When Luke wakes up he smells coffee coming from downstairs.
"How do you hold on to an angel?"

"Hook em by the wing joint. You know where it jogs in there? Clip or a claw... a snare would do it."

Luke thinks at least Chance doesn’t seem too hung-over.  Luke showers and gets dressed before heading downstairs.

“Good morning, Chance” Luke says as he enters the kitchen.

"Good morning Dad."

He looks tired, but calm.

Luke says, “I’ll go out and get the eggs, feed the chickens and rabbits, why don’t you stay here and scan the news to see if there is any mention of yesterday’s incident; although I highly doubt it.”  Luke debates asking Chance a few more question’s but thinks better of it lets just have a nice breakfast and then we can get back to dealing with his problems.  His problems, ha it’s more like all of our problems.  He fills the water jug and repeats the feeding ritual of yesterday.  As he does he weighs the merits of unearthing his firearms.  Having them handy would be wise, but if the authorities were to search the property, there would be enough evidence to put them both away for a long time.  I am especially hesitant to unearth the guns since the Porlockians have show some evidence of being fairly bullet resistant.

When Luke returns to the kitchen he asks Chance, “How do you want your eggs?  I have a bit of bread left and a jar of mulberry jam.  Is there anything else that you want with breakfast?”

"Sunnyside up. Coffee, eggs and toast is good enough. I don't remember the last time I had real eggs."

Luke makes the fried eggs that Chance has requested and poaches a pair of eggs for himself.  He slices up the last of the loaf of bread and places it in the toaster oven.  He pulls the jar of jam from the fridge and sets it and a spoon on the kitchen table.  While the eggs and toast cook, Luke puts a kettle on to make himself a pot of tea.  As he does so, he asks, “Chance is the coffee OK?  That bag has been in the freezer for quite a while.”  As the food is ready, he plates it and carries the plates to the table.  Then he returns to the stove fetching the kettle and filling the tea pot the he adds a few tablespoons of loose tea leaves.  After getting a mug and strainer he grabs the tea pot and heads to the table.  “Bon appetite”

His son digs in like he is starving. It only takes him 10 minutes or so to empty his plate and sit nursing his coffee.

Luke looks at Chance and says, “Would you like more eggs?  There are more in the basket on the counter just help yourself.”  How long have he and Frank been on the run?  I know I wanted to wait until after breakfast to start with this but Chance has already finished round one.   “How long have you and Fred been on the run?”

“That long!  Why didn’t you call sooner?  Last night, you said that Melody said that the Prolockians can be killed, but yesterday I saw Billy get shot in the chest and shoulder and then just stand up afterwards.  You said that from what Melody said they will die like anyone else.  Can you remember exactly what it was that she said them dying?” asks Luke.

"Their internal organs and parts are all the same as ours. But they are in incredibly good shape. She said she once worked on a triathlon runner who had a bike accident, and he had nothing on Dudley. And Dudley was an old guy. She said that he was in pain and grabbed the handle of his gurney, hard. It bent when he twisted. It's made not to bend."

“So very strong, very tough, and from what I have seen very fast.  Oh, and if that wasn’t enough they are damn good looking too!  Well, Chance what do you figure your next move is?  Go to ground , try to reconnect with the American Freedom Front, just keep running, do you ave any plans at this point?” asks Luke.

He holds his open hands up. "I don't have any idea dad. I guess I should try to disappear somewhere."

Luke smiles and says, “Well you’re welcome to stay here, but I think that sooner or later they are going to think to look here.  So the question becomes do we try and make a stand here?  I suspect from what I have seen we would be identified as terrorists and taken out without too much hoopla or effort.  The neighbors would all say “They seemed like such a nice family, we never suspected a thing.” And that would be the end of us and the coverage of the story if it ever even got that much time.  I think that the best option at this point would be to try to make contact with the American Freedom Front; the question is how to do so?  Holding up somewhere out of sight might be the best bet at least for the short term.  I can see if anyone comes looking here, you can safely rest and I will try to do some research on our new friends.  The question is where to stash you?”  Luke considers the merits of giving Chance the pistol.  He hates the thought of sending him off unarmed.  But on the other hand it doesn’t seem like, the pistol would be much defense against a determined Porlockian.  Also the pistol will draw unwanted attention form the law and the locals.  He decides against it for now.  But goes back to considering where best to put chance up in the middle of winter.

As Luke thinks about it he remembers a site where he had a project a few years back.  What was it called?  It had those little cottages along the lake front and they wanted to permit a new boat ramp.  Williamson Lake, no Winston Lake, no that wasn’t it; it was just east of Dry Ridge.  Williamstown Lake that was it!  I’m not even sure that they rent out those cabins during the winter, but I’m sure that thye must have heat or a fireplace as I recall them being occupied in late October.  It’s only about 40 minutes south of here; there wouldn’t be many neighbors to ask questions; and it certainly off the beaten path—at least this time of year.  I’ll need to look up the contact name for the project and see if I can get in touch.  “Chance, I think I know where you can stay for a while that no one would think of looking for you.  A nice place a bit south of here on a lake.  How does that sound?”

(sorry it must have been late, but I could have sworn that I posted this Friday night)

“I will run you down and introduce you to the owner, but then I will be coming back here to see if anyone comes sniffing around.  The place I am thinking about is a site where I did some for a few years back.  It is called Sunset Cottage at Williamstown Lake.  It’s a nice little cabin on the lake, but I don’t think that they typically rent it out in the winter so it should be available.  It might be a bit boring, but it will be safe.  Take the time to rest without looking over your shoulder every second.  Think about what you want to do next and develop a plan to execute that idea.  Take the time to watch a basketball or hockey game and just let yourself relax.  I will check in every few days or so and bring you some fresh food.”  says Luke .
