He nods and leaves.

Soon a regular uniformed county sheriff comes into the room and motions for him to follow. "I'm driving you home." he says.
"How do you hold on to an angel?"

"Hook em by the wing joint. You know where it jogs in there? Clip or a claw... a snare would do it."

“Thank you officer,” says Luke and follows him out to the car.

On the ride home Luke contemplates excitably what William meant by someone would be watching me?  It’s rural enough that a tail would be fairly easily spotted.  Obviously that have access to a helicopter, but that again would be easily noticed.   I wonder what level of access they have to the satellite network?  Luke runs his tongue over his lips as he thinks.  He continues to stew on the possibilities and even considers that William may have just said it to try to keep him in line with the fear of being watched.  Of course he could always test that theory by leaving the state.

Soon they pull up in front of his house. It looks somewhat disturbed from the outside, and his front door is still standing open. The officer gets out and opens the back door for him.

Luke climbs out of the back of the sheriff’s car.  He looks at this house with a bit of disgust, and mutters “They could even close my door1?  The damn heat has been running no stop since we left, I be surprised if the fuel tank isn’t just about empty now.”  He stops his muttering and looks at the sheriff and says, “Thank you for the ride, I know this wasn’t your doing.”

"Nope, not my doing."

He gets out and lets Luke out of the back of the car.

Luke steps out of the back of the car and gives a slight shiver in the cold night air.  "Thanks for the lift," he says and heads for the front door.

The officer nods and waits while he enters the building.

Luke walks to the door and then looks back over his should at the sheriff and asks, "Do you want a cup of hot tea?"

"I'm fine, thanks," Luke says as he enters the house and shuts the door.  he takes a quick survey of the house to see howmuch damage was done by the SWAT crew.  Then puts the kettle on to make a cup of tea.

The furniture has been moved and cushions just stacked back on them. The basement door is standing open as is the ladder to the attic. Nothing appears to be broken, just moved and put back without much care.

Luke shakes his head on disgust, but then smiles and thinks well it certainly could have been worse. Luke peeks out the window to see if the sheriff has left, and then goes to the kitchen. He looks at his now cold dinner and frowns. It had been such a good day with Chance, and then they had to show-up and ruin it.  His thoughts move to Chance,   based upon my evening it appears he was able to slip away unnoticed.  I hope that means he made it to the bar and was able to get a car.  He needs to get out of this area quickly.  He fights down the urge to head over to the bar and see if Chance is still there.  Hopefully, my leading them toward Washington was just subtle enough to be believable.
He realizes that he is pretty hungry and moves to retrieve his plate after a quick inspection he reheats the fish and sits down to eat.

No one interrupts his dinner this time.

Throughout his meal Luke’s mind wanders to Chance and how he is doing.  The worrying has him get up from his chair no less than three times to run over to the bar and see if he is still there.  But each time Luke sits back down, knowing that if he is being watched this will be the surest way to ensure that they catch Chance.  He finally decides that leaving Chance to his own for right now is best, he has been able to evade them so far.

But as he lets his meal settle, he begins to think about how they found Chance in the first place.  OK easy enough to think that he might run to Daddy if the $hit hit the fan.  But they do a flyover with a helicopter and could tell that he was here.  Thermal imaging maybe, but he was in the basement and near the furnace, and how could they be sure it was him.  Maybe they had acoustical sensors that they were able to hear our shouted conversation—far more likely.

The real question is how much access to surveillance do they have?  Getting an helicopter and some high resolution detectors, thermal or acoustical, is not really that significant.  Admittedly, I don’t have them but that isn’t saying much.  The real question is do they have access to satellite imagery and at what resolution and how close to real time?

I think that tomorrow I will need to test how closely my captors are watching me and what kind of response time I can expect.  Armed with a plan, Luke feels much better.  He cleans up the kitchen and spends some time rearranging/restoring the house and then goes to bed.
