(Is it still injured from that stick hitting game? I saw your post about having it checked out.)

He finds some painkillers and chugs them, in the meantime he smells something cooking. He is beginning to notice his hands trembling and he is thinking much about booze.

(Yeah, playing lacrosse and hitting people with my 6 foot stick. I totally destroyed my anterior cruciate ligament and a bunch of cartilage when I stepped in a hidden hole in the grass and it buckled. The damage locked the joint open and I couldn't walk on it. Had surgery and they took a tendon graft and drilled holes into my leg bones to anchor and pin it in, in place of the old one. Now comes the rehab.)

This sucks, I need a damn drink.

Jesse slowly and gingerly inches out of his sleeping bag and to the tent flap. He opens it up, smelling the food reminds him how hungry he is.....and maybe a drink with dinner.

"You about ready to eat?" she asks without turning around. He can smell the protein patties frying in the grill. "It'll be patties and cheese on a bun."

(My brother put a motorcycle down at 130 mph (209 kph) back around 1990 or so. He walked away from it, but tore those criss crossing tendons behind his knee. Then he went into the navy and basic training. He never told anyone about it because he was afraid they would boot him out of nuclear school if they found out he was injured before he entered. He said it was very painful.)

"I'm more than ready and that sounds great." he calls out as he sticks his head out.

As much as he wants food, and thats quite a bit, Jesse mind is occupied by how he's going to get a drink.

(Wow, your brother is lucky to walk away after an accident at that speed. Impressive that he could go through basic with an unstable knee. Stretching the knee out is painful. The donor site is more painful as it has a good blood supply.)

(My brother has had many misadventures, mostly attributable to his lack of common sense. Included in that list are:

Getting run over by a Suburban he passed out underneath during a concert, and walking away from it.
Getting into a fist fight with the police after a drunken high speed motorcycle chase.
Having a rattlesnake wrap around his arm as he tried to 'move' it off the trail.
Taking on several bouncers at a Madison Square Garden Grateful Dead concert.
Becoming the MMA Memphis Bar Fight champion in 1995.
Racing stock cars at Virginia Beach.
Attending 6 different universities before finally graduating.
Making the Missouri State University track team as a pole vaulter, in spite of weighing 210 lbs and being 30 years old at the time.
Living in a tent in a small park in the middle of the ghetto in Memphis while he worked on his Masters.
He is now a welder/ambulance worker/fireman/heavy equipment driver at a cement plant. But he does have a Masters in Creative Writing.)

"It will be done soon. I will bring you a plate. Are you cold in your tent?"

(Some crazy stuff in that list! Some quite impressive stuff and some dumb risky stuff too. Sounds like a colourful life. The rattlesnake didn't bite him?)

"Thanks Peggy, It's ok when I'm in the sleeping bag."

(Nope. But it made his son run screaming into the woods while my brother tried to fling it off his arm. He thought it was in torpor because it was sunning itself. And rather then walk around it or turn back he wanted to move it off the trail in case anyone else came through. But the thought of beating it with a rock from a safe distance didn't occur to him either. Like I said, kind of an idiot. I blame it on the numerous concussions.

My family is a case study of educated redneck hillbillly. My own adventures involved less poor rash decisions and more poor drunken decisions. For instance, after you have been hit in the head with a baseball bat, it freaks everyone out when you stick your finger in the hole along your eyebrow ridge and claim you can feel your skull. But I'm pretty sure I could. It only took 16 stitches to close when I finally decided to go to the emergency room a couple of hours later.)

(That makes me shivvver. No way I'd be game to try and touch a snake lying on the ground. You often see them lying across paths, soaking up the heat, but I always walk around them. The brown snakes here are deadly, but they leave you alone if you leave them alone.

Hehe. You sound like you know how to have fun. How did bat come to head?)

If I can't get a drink, I gotta get something.

"Thanks, these don't do too much."

(Heh someone swung it at me of course. Before I took it away from him. He was then sad.  :(  Happy I could rate on the Aussie fun scale. Guess not all yanks are too effete for that. )

Jesse takes a moment. Is she just deadpanning him and being sarcastic or has it gone over her head?"

She looks puzzled again. "You want the pain medicine in liquid form? Does that make it stronger?"

She eyes him oddly, not saying anything. Finally she says "I do believe that alcohol is not the preferred pain medication as most hospitals."
