Roleplaying Advice Needed

I have a GMing question. How do get players to find the answer to a question/mystery? Or how do you make them think they solved it? How and what type of clues do you set up?

that's the $6,000,000 question...


first you need to judge your audience and not just how clever they are, how their minds work and pitch your clues with that in mind.


if it's a set adventure and you want it to be set, lay out the clues, if they get it great, if not work out what happens then.


it really can be a play it by ear situation, I usually give them difficult clues and then add easier ones in later, if they don't get it then, I give them other ways to finish the adventure even if that is walking away without the magic sword etc..


clear? no, it wont be, just remember that the GM should have fun too... so don't make it too tough on yourself.
