The party moves through the large vacant gatehouse room and into a large (300' by 300') room that appears to have once been similar to the earlier room with the Šēdū statues.  However, the most noticeable difference with this room is that some kind of catastrophic event has caused a gigantic rift in the floor.

The side of the room nearest to your entrance tilts at a sharp angle which falls to the southeast corner, so that at its most extreme point, it's 50' below the level of the even part of the floor.

Through the gap, you can only see a dark void -- presumably into the rooms on the level below you.

On the other side of the rift, the floor is level, so that it would be an easy Climbing maneuver to climb towards the northeast corner, and then cross over via the northern side of the room.

There were once two Šēdū statues here in the middle of the room, but both of them lie tumbled and broken on the floor.

The astrologer points to the upper door on the other side of the room from your entrance.  "Through there," he says.  "We're close."

OOC:  You entered from the eastern entrance.  I have zero artistic talent, and this is a really hard thing to depict.  The gap is what's important, and the way that the floor drops down in the bottom corner.

To get us to the upper door indicated by the astrologer, we avoid the rift right, Enheduanna?

Klumenos

Handing his lamp to Murdas, Klumenos will move as quietly as possible following the east wall to the right up to the corner and then head north along the wall opposite the rift to the door in the middle of that wall. (coming through the east entrance turns right to corner then left to door in middle of that wall.)  He is most concerned about approaching the doorway quietly.

DW:  Yes.  That seems like the best path.  The astrologer wants you to go to the most northern door of the two doors on the western side.

Just X: Klumenos's Stalking Attempt: Success!  You glide through the shadows towards the northern door.  You're beyond the scope of the lamp you handed to Murdus, and so you can see nothing beyond the doorway.  The place is as silent as a tomb.

By now, everyone has noticed a faint breeze which issues from the rift in the floor, and seems to pass around the group through the door by which you entered.  It carries a stale odor.

"Better not mess with the beasts of the underground," said the Amorite. "Let's be quick in passing this floor."

doesn’t like the large chasm. He’ll follow Klumenos, but keep himself in a position between the crack and the rest of the party as much as he can.

All of the PCs except Klumenos feel like they're being watched by something in the crack in the floor.

Hiding Attempt v. Murdus
Roll 71 + 60 Hiding/Darkness Mod. -33 PC's Alertness Skill = 98
Result: Near Success.

Hiding Attempt v. Yarlaganda
Roll 71 + 60 Hiding/Darkness Mod. -38 PC's Alertness Skill = 93
Result: Near Success.

Hiding Attempt v. Indattu
Roll 71 + 60 Hiding/Darkness Mod. -23 PC's Alertness Skill= 108
Result: Near Success.

Hiding Attempt v. Lahwi-Addu
Roll 71 + 60 Hiding/Darkness Mod. -36 PC's Alertness Skill= 95
Result: Near Success.

Hiding Attempt v. Klumenos
Roll 71 + 60 Hiding/Darkness Mod. -13 PC's Alertness Skill= 118
Result: Success.

The rest of the group catches up to Klumenos, where he waits by the north door.  As the light penetrates the hallway, you see a corridor with an open doorway on the left further down.  The walls of the corridor are lined with weathered bas reliefs of humanoid figures, and a long band of writing.

The text is poorly persevered.  Someone who reads Sumerian can understand the following bits and pieces:

[unug ki ] e2 ?-an-na mu-[...]
She abandoned Unug and the Eana temple and went down to the netherworld,
zabalam ki gi-gun x (ZE2 ?)-na [...]
She abandoned Zabalam and the sacred terrace and went down to the netherworld,
nibru ki barag-dur2 -ĝar-ra mu-[...]
She abandoned Nibru and the Ebaragduryara temple and went down to the netherworld,
urim2 ki e2-dilmun-na ki [...]
She abandoned Urim and the Edilmuna temple and went down to the netherworld,
x-xki-a? e2 -x-x [...]
She abandoned ... and the ... temple and went down to the netherworld,
...

She abandoned Umma and the Eibgal temple and went down to the netherworld
adab ki e2 -sar-ra [...]
She abandoned Adab and the Esara temple and went down to the netherworld
a-ga-de3 ki e2 -ul-maš [...]
She abandoned Agade and the Eulmaš temple and went down to the netherworld
kiš ki -a e2-hur-saĝ-[...]
She abandoned Kiš and the Ehursaĝkalama temple and went down to the netherworld

Even without a religion roll, Lahwi-Addu knows many of the places are temples of the goddess Ištar (but a successful religion roll might get you more information).

Further on down this side:
e?-ne ga?-ra-ab?-dug4 ga-mu-[...]
I want to speak a word(?) with you, I want to ...
a-a-ĝu10 an ma-an-ze2 ? il2 -la2 il2 -[...] dalla bi2 -x-[...]
My father gave heaven to me, (saying?) "Raise, raise ...!"(?) ... he made ... shine
uĝ3 saĝ-gig2-ga an ma-an-ze2 ?-x [...] na-x-bi? an? ga-mu-[...]
The black-headed people gave(?) heaven to me(!?), ... I want to ... heaven
nin gu-la-ĝu10 ga-ša-an-ki-gal-la-še3 kur [...] mu-ta?-[...]
Towards/on behalf my eldest sister Ereškigal, ... the netherworld

On the other side of the corridor, Sumerian reader can understand:
ud nam-lu2 -lu7 x UD x NIG2 mu-ub-sig -ge -ne [...]-na?-za
When humanity was placing ..., ...
utah-he ed x (ITI.DU)-de3-de3 šag4 mu-un-tum2 -am3 ...
...plotted/decided(?) to ascend into(?) heaven
ki? [...] an-na AN igi bar-ra SAHAR guru7-še3 x [...] x-dub-bu-ne
The onlooking ... of heaven/An ... were pouring sand/earth in the manner of grain heaps
x x LU? nam-lu 2 -lu 7 ! a-da-min 3 !? [...] x UD x [...]
... humanity ... a contest ...

That's as much as you can make of it, so far.

Although he is fascinated by the text, he quickly realises he can't understand it.... "Does anyone understand this?" he asks.... "If so please can you read it out... slowly... ?"

Lahwi’s Attempt to Understand the Meaning of the Inscriptions
Roll 93 + 41 Religion Skill = 134.
Result: Absolute Success.

Trained by the temple of Ištar, Lahwi can identify the texts these passages come from.  The first inscription is part of a narrative poem about the goddess’s descent into the underworld.  The ways of the gods are mysterious, and while Ištar claims to want to attend the funeral rites of one of the underworld deities, instead she attempts to depose Ereškigal, her elder sister and ruler of the dark land.  But Ereškigal attempts to hold her in the underworld, while Ištar escapes and gives her playboy husband over to the pursuing demons.  The passages quoted above are specifically from an early portion of the poem, where the goddess abandons her temples in the land of the living to make the journey to the underworld.

The second passage is a myth about the building of a colossal tower by early humans.  The commotion and hubris of these humans angered the gods, who opened a great hole in the earth, and sent both the humans and their ziqqurat into the underworld.

"I'm not sure of this, fellows, but the ziqqurat we're in may be the tower of Babel. If so, there's no interest in exploring it to the full as it is never ending." He turned to the Astrologer, "Where next?"

wonders about the Tower of Babel, and what treasures it may contain.

He leaves the scribbles to the wise ones, and keeps his eyes moving for threats... with particular worry for the crack.

Klumenos's Stalking Attempt:
Roll 69 + 29 Skill = 98
Result:  Near Success.

As Klumenos moves through the darkness, he thrills with anxiety.  There's something in that great hole to his left, and somehow he thinks that it might be looking for him.  Will he complete the round without being noticed?

OOC:  Klumenos has managed to avoid the attention of whatever it is for now, but according to School of Hard Knocks, p. 144, in the instance of a Near Success, you have to succeed at a second roll with a +10 bonus to be successful for the round.  So give me another roll.

Any of the PCs want to attempt Observation on the crack?
