As the party moves across the room, they do not see or hear anything else from the serpent.  They reach the gate house, and peering outside, see the vista of the gray underworld crowned by the swirling, faintly luminous clouds.

The remains of the harpies you killed are still present on the porch outside the door.  Seven living harpies have descended, and appear to be cannibalizing their fallen comrades.   As you move forward, the foremost of the creatures enters the 100’ radius of the key’s effect.  She looks up at you, still chewing a piece of harpy flesh, but she spits this out to hiss at you.  She leaps into the sky and flies to the edge of the porch.

OOC:  In case anyone was wondering, my reading of the repel demon spells on the Paladin’s Base Exorcisms List is that, unlike Repel Undead, the targets do not get a RR.

The ropes are still present.

If there’s no objection, I’ll simplify this process and just have everyone make one climbing roll for the whole trip up the stairs.  It’s a long distance, but you’ve already passed this way once, and with the key, the harpies shouldn’t be that much of a danger.

You successfully make your way back up the side of the ziqqurat.  A few of the harpies circle overhead at the start of your climb, but eventually they get bored and go back to consume the rest of their fallen comrades.

Everything at the top of the temple is the same as you left it.  As you near the entrance that will take you back the way you came, there’s a bright flash of light behind you.  As you turn to look about, the deep bass sound of thunder rolls over you.  It lasts for several seconds, rattles your teeth, and reverberates in your stomachs.  As you look out over the gray plain, miles and miles away, you see a titanic storm brewing.  More lightning shoots out of the tempest — giant bolts that could obliterate a whole city or a mountain with one strike — and some of it strikes the ground, throwing up dirt and stone, and leaving a crater.  It’s very far away, and no danger to you.

Klumenos thinks, I do not like the look of that storm.  We need to exit quickly.  But the real question is will that storm follow us out.  The other question is have any of the armies reached the bridge yet?  It is probably best to plan on existing and finding cover as quickly as possible.  The the Minoan says, "Once we exit from under the bridge, I would suggest that we move directly for the cover of the village.  From there we can plot our next course of action.  Unless of course there are signs that the village is now occupied."

You pass through the gatehouse into the room with the two large šēdū statues.  You feel them watching you as you pass by them, and through the temple area into the little hallway that turns into a natural cavern.  You arrive at the hole under the bridge.

The Story So Far:  The astrologer and his allies unearthed a powerful artifact (the Tub, or namzāq namzītim) in a ruined city to the north.  The ancient cult who dwells in the city (and includes werejackals and probably some magic-users) persued them.  Before the werejackals could recover the artifact, the Babylonian and Ešnunnan armies ran into one another and started a huge battle.  The astrologer used the key to open the artifact, and release the Breath of Nergal -- magical vapors that cause anyone who inhales them to enter into a battle frenzy.
When the armies annihilated one another, the werejackals took the artifact; except now it was "open" and releasing its vapors constantly.  The astrologer had taken the key and hidden it in the underworld to stymie them.

You now have that key.  The artifact (the tub) is presumably on its way back to Kār-Nergal.  The werejackals still want the key, and one of them escaped to let his fellows know where you were.

Ok, thanks Enheduanna, so we should make our way to Kār-Nergal to try and obtain the artifact. From the conversation with the astrologer, we should appraise whether a fight with the werejackals and their magic-users is feasible to our group.

We also had some errand from Babylon. Is that accomplished?

Yes.  You were supposed to deliver a letter to the astrologer.  You did that.  He can write you a receipt to take back to the eunuch in Babylon, who will give you the rest of your silver.

OOC:  Klumenos has read the tablet that you delivered and it talks of the Army of Elam headed toward Kār-Nergal.  that army left yesterday and could be as close as 4 days away.  However, so far we know the Babylon, Elam and Esuuna all know of the relic.  I suspect that others powers are also aware and are making their way here or at least to Kar-Negral to make a play for it.  Also when we were in the underworld there was a storm blowing toward the ziggurat that we were in/on.  It is unclear if that storm will be confined to the nether world or if it can escape and impact us on the mortal plane.  So Klumenos is counselling speed first and safety second.
